Greenbelt
Brown - 12 controls, 4.1 km, 70m

Actual Distance Traveled: 5.5 km
Actual Climb: 141 m

I took it easy today. I originally was going to pass on this event but the Meet Director asked if I would help out. I didn't really have time to do a green or longer course so I went with Brown.

I bundled up and took my time. I had on my heavy long underwear which has been getting a lot of use lately considering how cold it has been. I also wore my winter boots. It was 6 F when I woke up this morning. The temperature didn't get much above 20 F. I wasn't going to mess around. I hate being cold, especially my hands and feet.

I didn't have any real difficulty with the course. I've probably been orienteering events at Greenbelt more than 10 times in the 12 years I've been orienteering with QOC. It is fair to say that I know the park pretty well by now.

The smaller creek in the park, which runs north-south, east of the main road, was completely frozen over in many places. I crossed it by walking on the icy surface of the creek four times. I don't recall ever doing something like that at an orienteering event before. I wish it had been warmer but I would not have been able to cross the creek in this manner if it had been.

I volunteered for about an hour and a half after I finished the Brown course. I helped with beginner instruction but the turn out was low so there really wasn't anyone in need of beginner instruction during my volunteering stint. I did my best to stay warm and left the park around 2 PM.
