Orienteering race 2:13:17 [3] *** 6.3 mi (21:09 / mi)
23c

Beer Chase - Blue
23 controls; 8 km; 180 m

Actual Distance Traveled: 10.1 km
Actual Climb: 180 m

Not too terribly difficult but I still managed to miscalculate on a couple controls. I found them all but not as fast as I might have.

I goofed when I was looking for 106 (the 5th control on the 1st loop). As I headed south from 105 (the 4th control on the 1st loop) I passed within sight of 120. I mistook it for 101, so when I hit the road I thought I was further east than I actually was. After crossing the road I continued south for a little while and then started angling southwest looking for the trench that 106 was supposed to be near. I didn't find the ditch and realized that something was wrong but didn't realize exactly what my mistake was until much later. What I did do was turn east until I reached the trench. I figured that must be the trench I was looking for. I followed it north looking for the control. I turned around and turned south once I saw the road. Following the east side of the trench and with a little help from another orienteer I found it without any trouble.

I definitely chose the wrong approach with 120 (the 2nd control on the 2nd loop). I should have taken the road to the ditch that led to 106 (the 5th control on the 1st loop) and then turned north. Instead I tried heading more or less due east from 130 (the 1st control on the 2nd loop). This occurred to me as I was circling around looking for 120 but I felt it didn't make sense at that point to head for the road. Maybe if I had circled for another 5-10 minutes without finding 120 I would have headed towards the road and tried that approach. Worth noting: I saw 120 when I was doing the 1st loop and headed from 105 to 106 which only made the trouble I had finding 120 when I was doing the second loop that much more annoying.

Against my better judgement I decided to bicycle to the Metro tonight. I could see the dark clouds moving in. I shoulda known better. I got caught in a fairly violent downpour. It started to come down when I was roughly 1.25 miles into the ride. At first it wasn't too bad but it didn't take long for it to get much worse. The rain was coming down so hard that it stung and my vision was impaired by the violent downpour.

I ended up taking a shorter route than the one I usually do. I was soaked by the time I finally got to the metro. It's been a while since I got as wet as I did tonight, while bicycling.

The funny thing is that I flew up Arlington Ridge. I can't remember ever getting to the to the top of the ridge as quickly as I did tonight.
