Edinburgh City Race. Actual distance run: 10.2km. Started late to avoid the rain, although some puddles in places. Got a few leg routes wrong, the map is detailed in places and I didn't look clearly enough. However, after starting gingerly, was pleased to be able to run fairly strongly around the course - the R Achilles problem being only a dull ache that got a little worse during the race, but didn't develop into proper pain this time. It's definitely on the mend. I think I can start to do careful runs of up to around 50 minutes now, maybe up to an hour (i.e. to work) after a week or so.

Enjoyed the course, some great legs, even though the design was quite out-and-back so much of the area was visited twice (back-to-back map), there were some good approaches from unusual angles - particularly one via the Scottish Parliament - and of course that meant we could do Dumbiedykes (the "Barbican" of Edinburgh) twice.

Taking it easy tomorrow though, no sense aggravating it more, at this stage. Likely will no-show or just do the first few controls.

Easy jog with light bag from work to Maida Vale. Got a bit lost but improvised and worked it out eventually. Achilles felt stiff but not painful.

SLOW Maida Vale Street-O. Nice area. Went around gingerly and slowly, and unfortunately the Achilles gradually turned from being just stiff to a dull pain, after the first few km.

Also, spent the last ten minutes trapped in a loading/service complex from hell, between Paddington Basin, Paddington Station and the Westway. Probably the most grimly designed, pedestrian unfriendly* space I've been to in London. Eventually found my way out and gingerly jogged/limped the short distance to the finish. Nice area, apart from that last bit, and I think my route was good (got 3/5 40s, would have been fourth but for the injury slowing me a bit near the end).

Nice to see a good JOK representation in the pub - JonX, Marie Claire, PhilM. As you'd expect for the area, the pub itself was also very nice, quiet and cosy.

Unfortunately I don't think I've done myself any favours with the Achilles and have probably set my recovery back again. So, absolutely no running for the next couple of weeks and then just a couple of km at a time.

*I did ignore a pedestrians prohibited sign at the entrance.

Oh dear. Well, there was quite a strong headwind the whole way in - but this, the first commute of the year, is my slowest direct commute into work - ever. Looks like the Christmas/NY vacation (with relative lack of exercise due to injury) was a net negative in terms of my fitness.

Walking up Meall Buidhe (opposite Stuchd an Lochain which we climbed a couple of days ago). As expected, easy, and calm conditions - a view from the top, only one brief spell of mist. However the summit ridge was an ice rink so we wore crampons to get along it (especially as I had forgotten ice axe - d'oh.) Came down the spur directly to the south, to the reservoir and dam, for a bit of variation.

Schiehallion. Cloud above 550m, snowline at about 700m. Very blowy at the top and a lot of spindrift - we all were covered in ice. Calm once back below the cloud. Happy to have got on the ill though - walked carefully and the Achilles wasn't too bad.
