9 AM

Cycling (To/from Event) 1:39:25 [2] 31.91 km (3:07 / km)

York city centre to the British Middle Champs area, then back (much more slowly) in very warm rucksack. Then later home from KX. Laden with heavy bag throughout.

Orienteering (Middle Distance) 53:56 [3] **** 6.5 km (8:18 / km)

British Middles. Men's Open. Sunny, warm. One to forget - a bit of a disaster really. Huge mistake on the way to No. 1 - think I came off the start kite in the wrong direction, my focus having gone as I was put off by an extremely upset competitor. Then lost my left shoe in a nasty swamp on the way to 3, took ages to untie the laces and get it back on. Finally, in the middle section, went over on my foot several times (each time more painful than the last). Gave up after this and jogged the rest of the way around the course. The area looked pretty but I found it nasty underfoot with tussocks and swamps everywhere.

Very sleep deprived (Ace Hostel in York was very noisy) so perhaps that was a contributing factor.
9 PM

Cycling (Old to New to Old) 42:21 [2] 15.25 km (2:47 / km)

LOK Kentish Town. Once again poor strategy let me down - went north, so when I finally came down to Primrose Hill, didn't have enough time to pick up the points there. So got beaten by Vince by 10 points, even though he ran at least a kilometre less. Also beaten by hfgnr, FRBlackSheep and substantially by paul_c who destroyed the course.

Some good planning too, some considerable thought needed to execute some legs, and got hopefully lost (first for a Street-O?) in a complicated estate that had a big circle in it - forgot to count the exits out of the circle. A good two minute mistake here.
11 PM

Note

1h45 - Carto: Stratford City. First draft sent off to the organiser! Yay! The two smallest levels are only done in outline, but good enough for a first walkthrough.

I've also provisionally planned 30 control locations - of note, 17 of these are outside. Competitors will probably find they spend the majority of their time outdoors. This is mor than just "shopping centre" orienteering!

SLOW Street-O at Crouch End. Cool and dry. Good race, had good flow, although R shin still hurting slightly early on. Lots of hills, it was often the case of turning at a junction and coming face to face with a very big looking hill.

Did OK (600 points, 7th or so) but the same score as Mike, beaten by Angus, and beaten (by a long way) by hfgnr. My strategy may not have been perfect, although I didn't think it was as poor as my placing suggested. Made one mistake on the course, which wasted 40 seconds, and had 90 seconds spare at the end, but struggling to see how I could have got much more...

Field Surveying (Stratford City) 2:10:00 [0]

Survey 1. Took 224 photos. A lovely sunny day, so spent plenty of time in the outside sections.

I have now realised that:
1. This is going to be a far harder map than I have ever drawn before - harder than the City of London map.
2. I thought there are four levels to the map. There are actually five. Or eight, if you count mezzanines.
3. I have less than four weeks to map it.
4. This is going to be one amazing event.

Varsity Match at Burnham Beeches. Warm and dry, sunny in places.

Felt sluggish for the first half, especially considering the fast, white and pretty flat terrain, but speeded up a bit in the second half. A few mistakes and quite lot of banana controls. Biggest mistake was to No. 16 where I had real problems holding the line and drifted a lot to the right, I was essentially lost as nothing fitted the map, until by luck I hit a fence corner I recognised from earlier.

GPS distance 13.35km.

Will try again tomorrow and should be able to do sub-30 this time.

Cycling (Boris Bikes) 15:39 [3] 4.87 km (3:13 / km)

Final pace-test. Early on, went over a pothole and the metal brace holding the plastic cover over the rare wheel snapped, digging the plastic in. Suprisingly, this didn't impede the bike that much but made it sound like a moped, with a definite electric "whine" as I speeded up. Made the Old Street fixies take notice though.

Cycling (Boris Bikes) 12:14 [3] 4.36 km (2:48 / km)

Curious to see just how fast I could cycle a Boris Bike (with its three low gears) from work(ish - nearest stand at the start was empty...) to Shoreditch, in rush hour, obeying all lights. Quite fast, it turns out. Just about able to keep up with the Old Street fixies, with a very high cadence. Certainly got me properly warmed up for RDC, I was shaking when I stepped off the bike!

The real challenge will be home to work on Thursday morning (assuming there are bikes available). Just under half an hour on my regular bike, will I also be able to dip below 30 minutes on a Boris Bike and so avoid the £1 surcharge?
8 PM

Jogging long (RDC) 57:28 [3] 10.26 km (5:36 / km)
slept:6.0 shoes: Nike Lunar +2s

RDC run (Cheetahs group) up through Highbury Corner and Highbury Fields to the Emirates Stadium, a lap around the concourse and then back, detouring through Shoreditch Park near the end. More of a flow this time, with fewer traffic light stops. The pace was also pushed quite well in places, although still this is a slow tempo for me. It is a group run - generally the group kept together pretty well, with only short breaks needed for people to catch up. Probably around 10 minutes not running - including a decent stop at the stadium itself for photos etc. Massive sprint at the end - all out sub 3min/km for the final 300m.

Right shin niggling a bit at the end - no running tomorrow.

St Andrews Urban Race. Running Course A. Cool, dry. Best run for a long time. Was able to dip below 4 min/km pace in the early part of the race, thanks to some very long, straightforward legs, before the race got quite technical in the town centre. No mistakes of any significance. Some tricky control placements, required careful reading of control descriptions to end up on the right side of uncrossable walls. Finished 6th of 33. Incidentally the straight-line distance for the course wasn't given, and the shortest possible, which was quoted, was 9.8km - 175m longer than I ran! I've double-checked the map and am pretty sure I didn't go OOB.

Orienteering (Sprint Race) 17:35 [5] **** 3.87 km (4:33 / km) +5m 4:31 / km
23c slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Lunar +2s

Scottish Sprint Championships - Race 1. Langlands, St Andrews University. Was raining lightly, but the grass and tarmac surface was suprisingly non-slippy.

Off the start, I forgot what sprint racing is all about (reading ahead while running fast) and got a rude reminder for the second leg when I ran into an uncrossable wall, and then, the other way, an uncrossable hedge. Finished about half-way down the results - with a good quality field, I was reasonably pleased. Will be interesting to see what the ranking points say though. Course "shortest possible route" distance was 3.3km - no straight-line distance available, so quoting my GPS distance here.

Mistake analysis:
To 2: Poor route choice (forgot about uncrossable features): 20s.
To 3: Perhaps a poor route chocie: 10s.
To 5: Perhaps a poor route choice: 10s.
To 8: Managed to overshoot fence ends twice on the way to this one: 30s.
To 16: Overshot this - I had already seen it to 15 which was annoying: 10s.
To 17: Oh dear - started to go from 16 to 18 and had gone around a building before realising: 20s.
To 19: Oh dear oh dear - completely failed to spot the sensible way out of the area and ran right back to the exit by No. 14, wasting a lot of time. Then overshot a later turning: 40s.

Total: 2m20 of mistakes - so should have been able to do this in 15:15.

Orienteering (Sprint Race) 17:16 [5] *** 3.53 km (4:53 / km) +25m 4:43 / km
21c shoes: Nike Lunar +2s

Scottish Sprint Championships - Race 2. North Haugh. Dry this time, and the ground was drying out, so fast running. Was a seeded start, with 30s intervals, i.e. everyone in front of me was slower than me, and everyone behind faster.

A better race overall than the first one, as my mistakes were more minor, although there were still plenty. Again finished about halfway down the list, but pleased that very few others managed a shorter time for their second race. There was a fun section early on which involved running between individual trees - it reminded me of the Ultrasprint in Regent's Park. My aiming was awful here, but the legs were so short I'm not recording any mistake time for this section!

Mistake analysis:
To 2: This was a fiddly leg, managed to miss a staircase, and needed to scramble down a bank. 20s.
To 13: Hesitated a bit here as forgot what building I had just passed. 10s.
To 19: Headed off along the line from 18 before realising that was a bad idea. Doubled back, but froze again at a section with lots of uncrossable walls. Eventually pulled myself together. 30s.

Total: 1m of mistakes. Better!
