Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 25:51 [2] 8.35 km (3:06 / km)

Hit the lunchtime crowd (joggers on the canal and noticeably heavier traffic on the roads) - bad news. Actually, literally hit at one point - oops.
10 PM

Cycling (Back Home) 29:15 [2] 10.68 km (2:44 / km)

Via Fleet Street.

Orienteering race (Local Event) 58:17 [3] *** 7.3 km (7:59 / km) +65m 7:39 / km

Running the Brown (top) course at a CHIG event at Epping Forest South - the scraggly, rather green and bitty section south of the main section of Epping Forest. Having said that, it was a pleasant enough - although very muddy - run, and there were enough technical legs (and well hidden controls) to trip me up in a couple of places.

Any marshy ground marked on the map was actually a lake, and pits were generally full of water! I started right at the end, and grabbed a finisher's map as there weren't any maps for my course left - apparently the map had been recycled once before already! I was entered for a shorter course, but was very glad to be running the longest one in the end, so that I could get a decent distance run.

Pottered around, never really picking up speed - I spend most of the time concentrating on avoiding watery and boggy ground, to avoid getting a new set of blisters - the ones I got from my wet run four weeks ago still haven't healed. Ended up finishing in a big grouping of people - although I finished 16th of 42, I would have finished 9th if I had picked up two minutes (which would have been very simple to do!)

Actual distance run was 9.6km.
3 PM

Field Surveying (Olympic Park) 1:15:00 [0] 10.5 km (7:09 / km)

A long, slow cycle around the perimeter fence of the Olympic Park, taking pics and estimating building locations for OSM - didn't really get much useful information though. Got some pics of impressive/oppressive security fencing. Time/distance approximate.

Finsbury parkrun. Very slow start as legs felt awful (no time to stretch or warm up, again, as arrived in the park a little too close to the off.) Gradually sped up throughout the race, but well off the pace overall - no kms below 4 minutes. Despite this, I felt like I was working hard after the first km. Sprint finish to overtake someone who had (slightly) cut a corner earlier. HR shot up for this. Finished 16th.

Another puncture coming in!
6 PM

Cycling (To/from Event) 49:06 [2] 16.1 km (3:03 / km)

First commute back on brand new back tire - another Conti Gatorskin. Via Poplar for street-o planning meeting. Busy during the rush hour. On the way home from Poplar, went via the Limehouse Cut, floating towpath, Bow Locks and the Olympic Stadium/Greenway. Going out, passed the 7000km mark - I've had the bike now for just over 10 months.

Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 25:21 [2] 8.55 km (2:58 / km)

One of those annoying strong headwinds - that really slows you down but doesn't make the trees sway.

Sunday Mar 21, 2010 #

3 PM

Cycling 1:09:22 [2] 23.11 km (3:00 / km)

To work, then to London Bridge to do some mapping, and finally home. The towpath was, as expected, extremely busy. I then got very lost trying to follow the diversion around the closed bit, due to some atrociously poor signing.
4 PM

Field Surveying (City of London Map) 2:30:00 [0]

Around More London and Shad Thames.

Cycling (To/from station) 1:06:46 [2] 20.88 km (3:12 / km)

To/from Finsbury Park and from Huntingdon station to/from an event near there.
12 PM

Orienteering race (Urban Race) 45:27 [4] *** 6.7 km (6:47 / km)
shoes: Adidas Adistar Salvations

WAOC Huntingdon Town Race, part of the Nopesport Urban League. After a short loop through the town centre, it was out to a modern housing estate on the edge of the town for much of the race, a series of legs through very "sprint-style" terrain with lots of alleyways and right angles. Rained a bit in the second half, and a bit gusty in places.

Actually ran 11.5km and took 55 minutes, and the actual straight-line course distance was 7.3km, but two legs got voided, and I accidentally did the "town centre" loop twice, mistakenly believing I had failed to punch the control at the end of a road-crossing timeout. The results computer deducted this second loop, presumably because it considered me to be in the second road-crossing time-out which was the reverse of the first. Also there was no set max-length for the timeout. So, I didn't get penalised for doing the extra loop, except that I was more tired for the rest of the course - and don't have any split times for the last few controls due the restricted storage space on my old-type SI card.

Road Running long 2:40:35 [3] 30.52 km (5:16 / km)
slept:10.0 shoes: Adidas Adistar Salvations

Through Victoria Park, across Mare Street and along the canal, past the Towpath Cafe and The Narrow Boat to Danbury Road. Then back along hte canal, across Mare Street, back onto the canal at Old Ford Locks, down to Limehouse Marina, along through Limehouse and Wapping, past Tobacco Dock to St Katherine's Dock, under Tower Bridge and past the Tower of London.

Then back along to Limehouse via Wapping High Street, along Limehouse Cut, with a small diversion, along the Floating Towpath (dark), past Bow Locks (impressive) and Three Mills (beautiful building!) to the Bow Flyover. Then, a longer diversion off the towpath due to Crossrail and Olympic works and past the Olympic Stadium and another, unrelated set of locks also called Old Ford Locks, and around opposite Omega Point, with more great Olympic Park views. Yeah, it would make more sense on a map.

Was expecting to feel pretty tired at this point, but was feeling great and pace wasn't slackening. Problem though - should have run 29km at this point and had only done 26km according to the GPS. So, instead of ducking back home past the Top O' The Morning, I went along the Hertford Union Canal, into the open part of Victoria Park (it was pitch black at this point), and around back along Victoria Park Road.

Had to do a few hundred metres more to warm done as legs felt very rubbery as soon as I stopped, but don't feel bad at all - could have easily done another 5km. Didn't take any water or food on the run, the conditions were very pleasant - still and dry, sunny, about 10 degrees.

Finsbury parkrun. PB for the course. Pushed hard on the hills and overtook people on them. Strong finish as someone (who I'd overtaken on the final hill) was right behind at the finish. Finished 6th.

Lucozade were handing out free snacks and nutrition advice at the end - bonus.

Score Orienteering race (Street Race) 1:03:10 [4] ** 11.94 km (5:17 / km)
ahr:165 max:189 slept:6.0 shoes: Adidas Adistar Salvations

SLOW Street-O in Twickenham. Once again, poor time management meant I was late back - although a least a minute of the delay was caused by trying to frantically count gnomes in a garden. I only found 7 despite my best efforts - the correct answer was 10.

HRavg proves I really wasn't putting enough effort into it. A pretty poor result in the end - I was out of the top 10.
