Hillwalking long (JOK New Year Trip) 6:15:00 [1] 11.75 km (31:55 / km) +900m 23:05 / km
shoes: Hillwalking Boots

Garbh Bheinn in Ardgour, up via the col. N ridge was scrambly with one steep and slightly exposed soft snow filled gully - a Scottish grade I winter climb apparently. Back down the S ridge. Cold, snow on ground, windy.

Beinn a' Bheir - the two Munros near Ballachulish. Cold, snowy, and gusty wind - very strong at times, vortices and spindrift.

Theme Orienteering race (Festive Frolic) 57:22 [3] ** 7.5 km (7:39 / km)
26c shoes: Gym Trainers

ELO Festive Frolic at Yellowcraigs. Cold, sunny, very pleasant. Alphabet-O course - next control letter was the solution to a puzzle at each control. Time limit was 1 hour, which I just managed. Finished second out of about 30, the winner was a junior so I got the senior prize of a bottle of wine.

Trail Running race (Parkrun) 19:35 [4] 5.0 km (3:55 / km)
shoes: Adidas Adistar Salvations

Edinburgh Parkrun at Cramond, a scenic and flat run along the promenade and back. My mum and brother ran too. Clear but cold, and the surface was mainly crunchy ice and compacted snow - not too slippy to run on but probably slowed things a bit.

Note

Got new Adidas Adistar Salvation running shoes from Santa!

Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 22:46 [3] 8.32 km (2:44 / km)

Along the canal - now generally fine, but very careful on any corners.

Cycling (Back Home) 31:48 [2] 10.6 km (3:00 / km)

To Fleet Street, then back home via Meath Bridge.

Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 27:02 [2] 9.27 km (2:55 / km)

Normality returns - although stuck to main roads the whole way in. Nearly got clobbered at my least favourite roundabout in the world - the Old Street Roundabout. Van started to pull out into left lane (where I was) as we were both approaching the lights.

Cycling (To/from Pub) 44:05 [2] 11.4 km (3:52 / km)

To the John Snow pub and then back home, to Angel and then the "usual route". The canal was a big icy but passable with care. The park was very icy and snowy. The worst were the residential roads in Victoria Park Village which were a giant ice rink. Forgot to brake at one corner and went right over onto the ice - ouch. Bike seems OK though.

Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 22:53 [3] 8.26 km (2:46 / km)

Cycle Commuting (Back Home) 52:30 [1] 10.31 km (5:06 / km)

The whole of London seems to be one giant ice rink this evening. Buses broken down all over the place, cars sliding around, cyclists walking, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria... I somehow managed to cycle back (via lengthly detours on main roads, and long stop at The Dove pub) without falling off. Amazing, really.

Sunday Dec 20, 2009 #

Cycling (To/from Party) 57:43 [2] 21.28 km (2:43 / km)

To Spitalfields, then to St James Park, then back home (via the Embankment).

Road Running tempo (5K) 20:00 [5] 5.0 km (4:00 / km)
ahr:179 max:192 shoes: Gym Trainers

Run around Victoria Park - 2 laps of the east part of the park, cutting across via the big fountain. Very cold (around freezing). Icy in a couple of places but not a big problem. Felt like I was putting in quite a bit of effort, and should have been on for a low 19-minute time, but I think the cold made me go slower than I felt I was. (Also still getting over a minor cold I've had for a little while. Was wheezing a bit near the end.)

Kilometre splits: 3:53, 4:00, 4:12, 4:05, 3:45. The course was essentially flat. An equal split overall (first 2.5km in 10 minutes exactly.)

Cycling (To/from Pub) 1:17:48 [3] 27.68 km (2:49 / km)

Various (6) short cycling stints - home to Brick Lane, then to Liverpool Street Station and back to Brick Lane, then up to Crouch Hill (via Green Lanes - got rather lost), then back home, then out to Bethnal Green and finally back home again.

Cycling (To Station) 11:36 [3] 4.17 km (2:47 / km)

Work to Victoria Station.

Cycling (From Station) 34:19 [3] 12.05 km (2:51 / km)

From Victoria Station to home, via The Mall, Kingsway, Angel and Hackney (stopping at the supermarket to get a bite to eat!) Nearly came a cropper on Kingsway, a car coming the other way swung across to turn right, and didn't slow down. I had to do an instinctive swerve and just made it. Too tired perhaps to get an adrenaline hit from that near-death experience, but certainly the scariest close encounter for a while.

Orienteering race (Sprint Race) 18:51 [5] **** 2.9 km (6:30 / km)
18c shoes: Gym Trainers

SO sprint race in The Lanes in Brighton, as part of the Brighton City Centre score event. I did this special section right at the beginning of my race, being one of the first people to enter the section, I got overtaken a few times and made two bad mistakes at controls 16 and 17, in the Royal Pavilion grounds. Vocal encouragement by some local girls loitering in the park didn't help. Finished this section 3rd out of 42 - possibly going a little too fast considering I had a regular street-O to do immediately afterwards.

Score Orienteering race (Street Race) 36:02 [4] *
spiked:15/16c shoes: Gym Trainers

Remainder of the Brighton race was a score event, my route included a couple of killer hills and some spectacular controls, including the bandstand on the sea-front. I got all the controls but one, and hand nearly six minutes to spare at the end, so should have been able to get them all (four people out of around 40 running did so) I wouldn't have won though - the winner did sub-50 minutes, including the special section. My time overall was 54:53, ending up 5th of 42 - the top three got all the controls.

Good fun on a very chilly but dry (and not frosty) night.

A short section of the canal was closed, necessitating a diversion. Otherwise, this could have been a sub-21er.

Cycling (To/from Event) 40:10 [3] 14.83 km (2:43 / km)

Road Running race (FPTT) 19:37 [5] 5.0 km (3:55 / km) +65m 3:41 / km
ahr:181 max:191 slept:5.5 shoes: Gym Trainers

Cold but dry. Arrived a bit late so had to rush a bit to get to the start. Didn't race off at the beginning but pushed steadily up the hill and tried to go as fast as possible on the steep downhill. Had a good last km as thought I was getting chased. The sun came out from behind the clouds for the second lap - very nice. Had a cappuccino in the cafe afterwards. Splits: 3:53 (down/up), 4:07 (down/up), 3:48 (down), 4:03 (up/down), 3:46 (up).

Note

Have entered the Edinburgh Marathon on 23 May next year (as has Ed.) My first one. Five months to train.

SLOW Street-O at Putney, on a damp but not too cold evening. Went clockwise around the map, getting the 40-pointers and as much as possible in between. Missed out six controls in the central part of the map - the plan had been to loop in and get these, but I didn't have time. I did, however, run across the Thames twice, to get two controls on the north side.

Finished fourth equal, with 500 points, behind Ed's 600 (max score 610). However, on looking at the map in the pub, I realised I missed an easy 30-pointer only 150m off my route, which would have left me joint second (I think) - grr!

Cycling (To Event) 35:14 [2] 12.78 km (2:45 / km)

The headwind is back. Got a slow puncture at the top of Pentonville Road. Only realised it at the bottom of the hill, and was able to limp along Euston Road with the tyre slowly deflating.

Cycling (To/from Event) 41:21 [3] 15.68 km (2:38 / km)

Work to Hampstead, then home via Holloway Road.

LOK Street-O in South Hampstead and Primrose Hill, also covering the Gospel Oak and Chalk Farm areas. Not too cold for the time of year, and dry and clear. A relatively large scale map (1:7500) and only 32 controls, meant I planned to get them all. This proved to be a tough task - I had around half the controls done after 30 minutes, but the remaining ones were more spaced out and on hillier terrain (around Primrose Hill) so I cut off a corner along the Regent's Canal and did as many of the remaining ones on the way back as I could.

Despite a number of poor route choices, one bad mistake early on where I overshot the control and thought I was somewhere else, and another later on where I failed to spot a control while running past it, I got back with a couple of minutes to spare, and (just) won the race - Jon X, who started a minute in front, got the same point score but with a penalty. Got a box of chocolate biscuits as a prize, and spent the rest of the evening at the Stag pub with LOK and several JOK/SLOW people.
