Orienteering race (Sprint Race) 15:20 [5] **** 2.3 km (6:40 / km) +50m 6:01 / km
ahr:183 max:197 spiked:14/14c slept:6.0 shoes: Gym Trainers

Sussex Sprint Championships event at Sussex University, near Brighton - qualifiers. Lovely hot today, so I decided to take the trip down to Brighton on the train and run at these events (plus a chance to advertise the City Race.)

I had a generally good run - a few slight wobbles coming out of controls, as I didn't plan ahead and so tended not to know what direction I was coming out from - particularly leaving No. 2 and No. 6. My route to 1 was safe (as I was nervous that a run of steps might contain a wall) but slower than the best route - it was also confused by a large flight of stairs not being on the map. I also hesitated and didn't take the best routes to 12 and 13. For such a short, fast race, even a few seconds is bad news. As it was, 6 people finished less than 16 seconds faster than me, including one who beat me by one second. Grr! I did run for the line though.

Combination of the heat, humidity, the relatively steep course (the campus is on a slope) and lots of steps, and the very short race, meant my HR was higher than normal for the race. Ran 3.0km and climbed 125m.

Finals of the Sussex Sprint at Sussex University. The finals used the whole of the campus rather than just the southern section for the qualifiers, so there was plenty of climbing, as the campus is in a bowl and slopes up to the north.

I found this race not quite as technical as the qualifiers, but harder, as I was a little stiff from the morning's race, it was hotter, I hadn't had any lunch, and there was the burden of expectations, as I'd qualified only just slower than a big pile of people. As it was, I felt still on the way to the first control and never really got going so smoothly as during the qualifiers. I took a couple of deliberate "alternative" routes to shake off one person, which just put me further behind them.

Completely failed to see the direct way to No. 2 as a line crossing looked a bit thicker than it actually was. Took a risk to No. 4 and ran the wrong side of a fence. Also poor routes to No. 11 and No. 13 as I was trying to lose someone. Also to No. 15 and No. 16 I played it safe and went low rather than high - the latter was faster it turns out, but not pathed. Saw the "trick" at No. 17.

HRmax 200 is I think a record - and probably higher than it should be!

Ran 3.7km with apparently only 95m of climbing (felt more than that, I think my GPS is over-smoothing the climbing.)

It was good to run on these nice ISSOM maps, which also helped with thinking about the cartography of the City Race map.

Field Surveying (OSM) 1:20:00 [1] 8.0 km (10:00 / km)

Surveying the Addiscombe area, north-east of Croydon, as part of the OSM Croydon mapping party. Took longer than expected, and I had to stop without having covered the full area intended, as it got dark by 1930. Winter is coming...

Cycling (To Event) 54:31 [3] 19.1 km (2:51 / km)

Moving time. Cycling from home to Addiscombe, north-east of Croydon.

Orienteering race (Trail Challenge) 45:07 [4] ** 10.0 km (4:31 / km)
ahr:180 max:191 spiked:7/7c slept:7.0 shoes: Gym Trainers

SLOW 10K Trail Challenge in Richmond Park. Absolutely loads of people turned up - more than a hundred, including quite a few people with BPTT T-shirts. Weather was changeable, with a rain shower early on - quite pleasant actually - and quite cool for August.

Actual distance run was 10.4km. Ran well, and good navigation apart from a poor route from 4-5 which cost me 60 seconds. Nick B won in around 39 minutes, second place was 41 minutes.

The race was a mass start and a lot of people ran off hard at the start. Quite quickly I got away from the pack, as they took a different, straighter route to the first control, but I went fast to lose them.

I ran hard for the last few controls to stay ahead of someone else, and certainly could have run harder for the whole race - I didn't feel tired at all at the finish and had lots of energy left, although my knees hurt from the steep, tussocky decent right at the end. I think that the week's orienteering in France has improved my base level of fitness quite a bit.

Cycling long (To Event) 1:25:00 [2]

From home via Clapham to Ham, into a head-wind for much of the way.

Cycling long (Back Home) 45:00 [3]

Fast cycle back from Putney, via Vauxhall, with a tail wind helping.

Orienteering race (Multiday) 1:34:16 [3] ***** 7.3 km (12:55 / km) +200m 11:21 / km
ahr:157 max:180 20c shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

French 6 Days - Day 6: Plo de las Conquas. Ran 13.05km (!). Cool, as very early start.

A fantastically complicated area, orienteering really doesn't get much better than this - and my orienteering really doesn't get much worse than this. Frustrated with my results the previous day, I ran far too fast, making big mistakes in areas where I really should have been going at a slow jog.

Running 13km for a 7.3km race, in terrain where you could run nearly straight as there weren't large obstacles, says it all.

Orienteering race (Multiday) 1:28:06 [3] ***** 7.33 km (12:01 / km) +280m 10:05 / km
ahr:156 max:181 25c shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

French 6 Days - Day 5: Les Bouzigasses. Ran 11.14km. Quite cool, as an early start.

The hardest technically so far, and I ran too fast, making too many mistakes - I ended up running almost 4km further than needed. Interestingly, my HRavg was the lowest it's been for a long time in an orienteering race.

ahr:163 max:190 22c shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

French 6 Days - Day 4: Le Patus. Ran 10.95km. A very early start today, so nice and cool.

My fastest run, although not my best placing.

Orienteering (Multiday) 23:14 [4] ***** 2.3 km (10:06 / km)
27c shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

Orient-show Event. Ran 2.3km (not sure of the straight-line distance.)

Took 22:14, + 2 penalties for missing correct controls, which added a minute.

Course here.

French 6 Days - Day 3: Les Rocs de Louradou. Very hot (over 30C) - my latest start.

My best day, had a good flow, and made no big mistakes.

French Day 2 - La Tour des Aiguillons. Ran 11.4km. Hot.

Made one spectacular 10 minute mistake when I made a huge parallel error and wrong the wrong side of a large hill, deviated over 500m from the straight-line.

Orienteering race (Multiday) 1:48:12 [3] ***** 8.05 km (13:26 / km) +300m 11:20 / km
ahr:171 max:188 23c shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

French 6 Days - Day 1: La Salvetat. Ran 11km. Very warm.

Three big mistakes (up to 10 minutes each), including one in a nasty, complex green area with a well hidden control - I was within a couple of metres of it several times.
