Hillwalking long (Munros) 5:35:00 [2] ** 11.6 km (28:53 / km) +1200m 19:02 / km
slept:6.0 shoes: Hillwalking Boots

Day 4 of the JOK New Year trip. An ascent up Beinn Alligin in Torridon, with Ed, Phil and Jon X, from the road by Torridon House (50m above sea level.) A real classic Munro, this was great fun, although we were in mist above 800m. Highlights were the dramatic "Eag Dubh" gash just before the main summit, and the "Horns of Alligin" at the end of the ridge, that we visited on the descent. These involved some easy scrambling to keep to the crest - despite the misty and somewhat damp conditions, they were straightforward and good fun. Saw a couple of white ptarmigan and deer on the way down. The views, on the descent, across to Upper Loch Torridon, Liathach and Beinn Dearg, and back to Beinn Alligin as the clouds disappeared, were stunning. However it got quite dark as we finished - the very well made NTS mountain path at the end was much appreciated.

Two Munros: Tom na Gruagaich (922m) and Sgurr Mor (986m). I climbed these previously, in April 1999 with EAMC, doing the traverse the other way around.

Note

Day 3 of the JOK New Year trip. Rested to try and rid myself of hip pain. Of course, I picked the only day which had dawn-to-dusk clear skies. The others did the Coire Lair horseshoe.

Day 2 of the JOK New Year trip. Ascent of Slioch from Kinlochewe (10m). The first (and last) 5km were along a fairly level path beside Loch Maree. Ed and I took a wrong turn here and ended up on the wrong side of a raging river - the Abhainn an Fhasaigh. We eventually crossed it above a ravine - this was a tricky crossing with a strong current, and we got very wet. We then climbed up into the high corrie surrounded by Slioch, joining the others again - and into the mist and stinging hail. The section through the corrie was pretty nasty, however the hail stopped as we climbed steeply onto the ridge and then onto Slioch's twin summits - no view, windy and cold with some snow on the ground. We then followed an interesting narrow ridge, and then dropped steeply back down into the corrie, and back home. It was completely dark by the time we got back. My hip, injured from yesterday, hurt a bit, especially on the higher sections.

One Munro: Slioch (980m).

Hillwalking long (Munros) 4:30:00 [2] ** 17.5 km (15:26 / km) +750m 12:42 / km
(injured)

First day of the JOK New Year trip. Stopped off on our journey north from Edinburgh to Kinlochewe, to climb a couple of Munros E of the Drumochter Pass, from the A9 near Dalwhinnie (390m), walking with Ed, SGB, Phil and Jon M. Route took the good stalker's track up to near the col between the two hills, walking to the first then doubling back and to the second. Descent was a suprisingly sharp ridge on the NW of the latter hill, beeside the Allt Coire Chuirn. Conditions were cold, with thick mist above 600m, and no view from the summits. A little snow on the ground. Unwisely used my walking pole going up, which hurt my hip for the next couple of days.

Two Munros: Carn na Caim (941m) and A' Bhuidheanach Bheag (936m). My first since April 2003.

Cycling warm up/down (To/from Event) 1:05:50 [2] 20.43 km (3:13 / km)

From home to Pimlico, via The Strand and The Mall. 33:20 out, 32:30 back.

Score Orienteering race (Street Race) 1:00:55 [3] * 11.4 km (5:21 / km)

SLOW Street Race around Pimlico and Belgravia in West London. Got off to a very poor start - after spending ages trying to locate the start and then going for a control well away from the rest, I then made a mistake at my second control and so got very lost on the way to the third. Lost a good 3-4 minutes here - a big mistake for a street race! Picked things up there somewhat and got into a good flow, including an 800m dash north from Sloane Square at one point. Gave myself a little bit too much to do at the end though - 1km in around 4 minutes, including crossing the concorse in front of Victoria Station at the end of the rush hour, and so got back a minute late. I sprinted the last section and pushed the HR a little high (196bpm) and felt a little uncomfortable, so scaled back for the final 300m.

Scored 485 points (500 - 15 point penalty) out of a maximum of 760, for controls consisting of 10, 20, 30 and 40 points. Got 3 of 4 40 point controls, 8/10 30s, 6/10 20s, and 2/10 10s. Strategy was to concentrate on the 40s and 30s, and not to be tempted by clusters of low scoring controls. Came fifth out of 40 runners. Paul was second equal, 35 points ahead.

Field Surveying 2:20:00 [0]

Surveyed the rectangular area bounded by Moorgate, St Paul's Cathedral and the Museum of London (Sections 11 and 18) except the area around Guildhall (Section 17) as it started to rain persistently later on. Included the edge of the Barbican Estate. I'm realising now even more that this is going to be an insanely tricky area to map. Even the tiny section I saw today - the plaza suspended above London Wall - is a complete nightmare to draw.

One nice side-effect of these detailed field surveys is I'm getting to discover parts of the City I'd never seen before. A couple of examples today were a good section of the original London Wall, and a nice park, Postman's Park, near where I used to work, but never knew about.

Cycling 28:13 [2] 9.1 km (3:06 / km)

Retrieved bike at Great Portland Street, relinked the chain and cycled home.

Saturday Dec 8, 2007 #

Note

Bike chain snapped on Great Portland Street while en route to Paddington. Bike is spending night there - hopefully it will be still there when I'm able to retrieve it tomorrow.

Screaming along London Wall and Whitechapel Road. Max speed, just after the Sainsbury's Junction, was 41kph. I think my cycle computer is still dropping some sections, but it was certainly a sub-16 minute time - my fastest back from uni.

Field Surveying (City of London) 2:15:00 [0]

Surveyed Finsbury Circus (13) and remainder of Leadenhall (5). Got stopped, questioned and ID-checked by two PCSOs for "acting suspiciously with a camera" on Broadgate. Oops. This is probably not the last time this is going to happen - my surveying is pretty thorough.

Cycling (To/from Event) 51:45 [2] 16.66 km (3:06 / km)

To/from Wellcome Foundation by Euston station. Stopping on the way in the City of London for field surveying.
