York Park Race. Winning time 26:08. Finished 20th of 82 in the Men's Open course.

Cycling warm up/down (To/From Station) 50:17 [2] 15.63 km (3:13 / km)

Trail Running race (BPTT) 20:53 [4] 5.0 km (4:11 / km)
slept:6.5 shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

143rd Bushy Park Time Trial. I was a bit off the pace today - I didn't use anyone as a pacemaker. Finished 101st out of 409 - so not my slowest BPTT but my lowest finishing position. Never really wanted to push myself to the limit. Weather was cool and overcast, but dry.

Last week I finished 40th (time 19:54) - to have finished 40th this week I would have had to have run 19 minutes dead.

Jogging warm up/down (Warm Down) 6:00 [1]

Jogged around the lake.

Cycling warm up/down (To/From Station) 39:42 [2] 13.26 km (3:00 / km)

To/from Waterloo. 18.5 mins out, 21.5 back.

"Small-O" evening event put on by LOK at Hampstead Heath. Hot and humid weather. I made fewer mistakes than I did at Clapham Common on Tuesday, largely because I was going a lot more slowly and so had time to read the map. Still made a few though. The highlight of the course was a huge final leg - over 1.5km. I had Ed C right behind me for this so I wasn't hanging around. Ed finished in 36 minutes.

Cycling warm up/down (To/From Event) 1:04:15 [2] 21.02 km (3:03 / km)

From work to Hampstead Heath, and then home.

Orienteering race (Sprint Race) 29:03 [5] ** 5.38 km (5:24 / km)
spiked:8/16c slept:8.0 shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

SLOW evening race on Clapham Common in south London. The common is very flat and fast and I was expecting to not make mistakes. In the end, I messed up half the legs, which is appalling. I could have done so much better than I did. Still, this is I think the first competitive orienteering race where I've run under 6 mins/km. I certainly ran a lot further than the 5.38km course length too, so I will have gone under 5 min/km in terms of running speed. Nick B and Ed C substantially beat me, clocking around 21:30 and 22:30 respectively. Another six people beat me though, which wouldn't have happened if I had had a clean race. I estimate I could have finished this race in 26 minutes which would have been fourth. As it was I was 9th out of 31 runners.

The weather was hot and sunny - and the sun was in my eyes for quite a bit, obscuring my vision somewhat. The course was made more interesting by needing to run through a multitude of impromptu football and rugby games - the park was packed with people as it was a lovely summer's evening.

The mistakes were:
To 1: Went in the wrong direction, arced back. (10s)
To 3: Poor route choice, and poor attack. (15s)
To 4: Didn't read ahead, trying to avoid footballers. (25s)
To 5: Completely messed up this technical leg, ended up at 8. (45s)
To 6: Again went in the wrong direction, arced back. (15s)
To 8: Despite having been there already, still poor approach. (20s)
To 10: Overshot. (20s)
To 15: After the very long leg to 14, I was tired and misread the map - the map was "busy" with route lines here, so I headed off in the wrong direction. (40s)

I'll plot my route on RouteGadget shortly once the map's up on the SLOW RouteGadget site, so you'll be able to see all my mistakes in their glory. I'll also be able to work out my true running speed for this race - my pace certainly felt similar to that in the 5Ks I've been running recently.

Jogging warm up/down (Warm Down) 15:00 [1]

Warm down with Ed C.

Note

I've done a bit too much Level 5 running this week, I need to do some longer, slower stuff... I'm probably running in another evening event at Hampstead Heath on Thursday evening. I'll take this one easier. My back seems to be getting better - just a dull pain now.

Not racing today at Hylands Park as I work up with a bad back. It should hopefully be cleared up though for the Clapham Common sprint race on Tuesday evening.

Trail Running race (BPTT) 19:54 [5] 5.0 km (3:59 / km)
slept:6.5 shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

142nd Bushy Park Time Trial. One second off my personal best. Started off fast and felt tired quickly, so eased back. Followed a girl closely for the first third, Baz for the second third and some kid aged 12 for the last third. The last 400m were really tough, I was pushing hard to try and record a new PB. I finished 40th of 348, which is certainly my best placing so far, and also beat Baz for the first time - he tired a bit at around half way. Nice and sunny, quite cool, a bit breezy. Bushy Park again looked really beautiful. Such a nice place. Photo of me finishing.

Jogging warm up/down (Warm Down) 4:30 [1]

Cycling warm up/down (To/From Event) 41:00 [2] 13.2 km (3:06 / km)

To/from Waterloo.

Orienteering race (District Event) 58:58 [4] *** 7.8 km (7:34 / km) +330m 6:14 / km
spiked:13/20c slept:8.5 weight:64.6kg shoes: Standard White O-Shoes

Running the Brown course at a DFOK district event at Lesnes Abbey Woods, in south-east London. Despite the inner-city feel to the area, this is a map with a surprising amount of climb - it's the edge of the North Downs as they meet the River Thames. So there was a lot of up-and-down on this course. Some of the climbing could be avoided though with careful route choices. The map was quite green in places, but the planner made good use of the nice areas. After several short and quite technical legs, the latter part of the course had several long and flat route-choice legs, so I was able to get moving fast later on.

I made quite a few mistakes on a map which was missing some path and contour detail, although none of them cost me more than 90 seconds each, so overall quite a clean run. It didn't rain during the race, but it had been raining before, so the paths were slippery and muddy, and it was quite gloomy. It rained heavily afterwards, I'm glad I wasn't out in that.

I almost beat Ed Nicholas - just 9 seconds down. However I was never in a chance of beating Ed Catmur or Nick Barrable - they were 8 and 10 minutes faster than me, respectively. But I'm pleased at finishing fourth in a competitive field, with 28 finishers.

Jogging warm up/down (Warm Down) 6:00 [1]

Warm down from a pretty fast race, around the ruins of the abbey at Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Note

I'm definitely going to York for the Park Race there on Bank Holiday Monday, having finally found cheap train tickets there.

Trail Running race (BPTT) 21:10 [4] 5.0 km (4:14 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

141th Bushy Park Time Trial. Finished 74th of 361. Didn't put quite so much effort into it this time, so a bit slower. (Also Alex wasn't around to pace-set off.) Felt much better after the finish though - didn't feel that tired or aching unlike last week. Weather was dry and sunny but not too warm, and quite breezy.

Jogging warm up/down (Warm Down) 6:00 [2]

Post-race jog up and down one of Bushy Park's lovely grassy avenues.

Cycling warm up/down (To/From Event) 39:00 [2] 13.2 km (2:57 / km)

Waterloo station to/from home, via London Bridge. 18:30 there, 20:30 back.

Third best time ever, and I wasn't even trying. Coming back late at night after a very long day, so little traffic, but it was raining.

Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 17:31 [2] 5.28 km (3:19 / km)

Bank Holiday, so roads very quiet, but headwind in all the way. Was also a bit worried about my right knee, which has been hurting slightly when cycling, since my trail race on Saturday. So I took it very easy.

Cycle Commuting (Back Home) 12:48 [5] 5.16 km (2:29 / km)

New PB for the commute - thanks to the completely clear roads due to the public holiday. Max speed 47 kph - almost breaking the speed limit...

Trail Running race (BPTT) 19:53 [5] 5.0 km (3:59 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:66.2kg shoes: £20 Lightweight Running Shoes

Running in the 140th Bushy Park Time Trial, near Kingston in south west London. It's a weekly race on grass/tracks, 9am every Saturday. I had a good first race, although I tired badly in the last 500m, dropping 6 places to finish 56th out of 353 finishers. It was useful running with a friend as I followed his pace in the latter half, before he pulled away at the end. Weather conditions were ideal - dry, overcast and not too warm.

Jogging warm up/down (Warm Down) 10:00 [1] 1.5 km (6:40 / km)

Warm down with Alex. Up and down one of the grassy avenues, saw some deer.

Cycling warm up/down (To/From Event) 40:00 [3] 13.0 km (3:05 / km)

Waterloo station to/from home. 19 minutes in, 21 minutes back.

Cycling long 2:00:00 [1] 10.0 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: New Brown Leisure Shoes

Slow cycle, taking numerous photographs for a Walkingworld walk (to be featured in The Guardian newspaper - watch this space!) From Alexandra Palace to Hampstead Heath, via Muswell Hill, Highgate Wood and Highgate Village. Really nice and sunny, I took almost 200 photos, before my camera battery conked out. Route.
