Orienteering race (Park Race) 30:24 [5] ** 4.94 km (6:09 / km)
ahr:181 max:196 20c slept:6.0 shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

SLOW Park Race in Tooting Bec Common. Ran hard, at the beginning and especially at the end as I was being chased by Eric Le Roux (who got me on the run-in.) A runners course, but with a few technical legs and a couple of big route-choice legs - I made a mistake on the second long leg and also the technical ones near the end.

Actual distance ran was 6.5km. Kilometre splits: 4:59, 4:04, 4:49, 4:41, 5:19, 4:33, 2:00 (500m). Finished 5th out of 76 runners. Weather was hot and dry (but humid.)
11 PM

Cycling (To/from Event) 1:24:39 [3] 30.51 km (2:46 / km)

Work to Tooting Bec Common, then later home. On the way back, stopped around KCL Guy's Campus to wander around some of the alleyways there, as an informal field survey for the final bit of the City of London Map extension.

Fast on the straight section back from Streatham to Borough.

Home to Waterloo, then later from Teddington to Bushy Park, then later to Surbiton (all before 10am) then, the following day from Waterloo to Borough, then later from Borough back home. Very warm on the Saturday, hot on the Sunday.
9 AM

Trail Running race (BPTT) 19:55 [5] 5.0 km (3:59 / km)
ahr:180 max:196 slept:5.5 shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

Very hot, considering the time-of-day. Wanted to push hard and do a sub-19 time but it was not happening in this heat, + it took 5-6 seconds to cross the start line and the first 1km was also quite blocked with people. 650 at today's BPTT, the event is getting a little too big. Massively increased the pace for the last 300m to get a sub-20 minute time (although I wasn't keeping track of the overall time during the race.

ahr:176 max:184 slept:6.0 shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

SLOW Trail Challenge in Ham Riverside, running the 10K course. Very hot and sunny. I arrived only a few minutes before the start, so had no time to look at the map and plan routes. So, I followed the pack for the first two controls. After then, I started to take my own routes, through the western part of Richmond Park and back through Ham Riverside - I didn't see many other runners in this section, and took some slightly poor route choices, running 200m further than most others I spoke too, according to the GPS. Didn't make any significant mistakes though. Just felt my running speed was a little slow - but it was very hot. Ed won in just over 40 minutes.
10 PM

Cycling (To/from Event) 2:09:37 [3] 50.1 km (2:35 / km)

From work to the Hawker Centre, Ham (took some wrong turnings, so had to go most of the way down Oxford Street) in 58 minutes, then later back home via Shepherd's Bush, Euston Road and the supermarket. Able to sustain around 37km/h along Euston Road.

Cycling hills (To Event) 2:15:00 [3] 32.9 km (4:06 / km) +553m 3:47 / km

Exhausting cycle from Dunblane to Loch Turret Reservoir, via Muthill and Crieff, on a very heavy, steel, three gear Raleigh bike (the bottom gear wouldn't stay in position which made things harder.) Had to get out of the saddle on numerous occasions, and push the bike up two parts of the final 300m climb to the loch. Time includes two rests.
3 PM

Hillwalking long (Munros) 4:10:37 [2] 16.76 km (14:57 / km) +748m 12:14 / km
shoes: Hillwalking Boots

The weather was so nice, and I was in Edinburgh, so it would have been rude not to have "bagged" an extra Munro - my 155th distinct one. This was Ben Chonzie, near Crieff, climbed from the Loch Turret Reservoir dam, anti-clockwise, using the excellent track beside the loch to get to the head of the valley, then a short and easy climb to a col, then smooth, grassy slopes, populated with mountain hares. Overshot the summit slightly, following a sheep-track. Time to summit was 2h 20. Visited a minor, rockier summit on the return. Very hot day, drunk several litres of water from mountain streams. I had one eye on the clock as it was a long cycle back to the station at the end of the walk.
6 PM

Cycling (Back Home) 1:41:11 [3] 32.9 km (3:05 / km) +290m 2:57 / km
shoes: Hillwalking Boots

Back to Dunblane station. Had hoped this would be easier as the starting 6km was all downhill, but there were two big hills in the centre section after Muthill, along a Roman road, and I had to get off and push the heavy bike over these. I was racing to try and make a train, as each km passed by I was just inside my target, but only just. With 15 minutes to go I suddenly realised the train left four minutes earlier than I had thought, so the last 4km were a frantic and exhausting pedal, including the wrong way down Dunblane's old high street. Apart from my poor timekeeping it was a pleasant enough route. After 101 minute journey, made the train 20 seconds before it departed.

Hillwalking warm up/down (To Station) 1:50:00 [1] 8.0 km (13:45 / km)

Knoydart Day 5 - Walk-out - 4km to the road, then 4km along the road to Locheilside Station, where, while waiting for my train to Fort William, the Hogwarts Express steam train went thundering past towards Glenfinnan. Kewl. As planned, met SGB+Per on the train. Pete went the other way at the road-end, to hitch to Mallaig for a day's more conventional tourism.

Hillwalking long (Munros) 10:00:00 [1] 23.0 km (26:05 / km) +1000m 21:26 / km
shoes: Hillwalking Boots

Knoydart Day 4 - The walk-out day, and for most, it was a straightforward route out to the road and pub. Pete and I took advantage of the rapidly improving weather though, to climb another Munro (dropping bags at a col) and then heading out, but camping a few miles from the road for one more night of the wilderness experience. (The midges were intense this evening - a huge and terrifying swarm surrounded the tent making escape impossible, but they had all gone in the morning once the wind returned.)

After a 11km walk-out, we climbed over two cols, to get to the foot of the mountain.

We climbed Gulvain, from the west ridge of the south top, then along the summit ridge and back to the col. The 6km/2h 20 section from the col was done ultra-light with no water, food or kit, apart from a cagoule, which was handy as the windy was quite chilly on the top - it was sunny though, and very pleasant. It was extremely warm back at the col. Streep looked impressive (it's just 5m short of Munro status) and one for climbing in the future.

Pete came into his own today and outpaced me for almost the whole day, apart from the steep initial descent off Gulvain.

Knoydart Day 3 - A shorter day, and mainly pack-free. After moving our kit 1km to the head of the valley, we split into three groups (I was on my own as my speed was half-way between the two other groups) and climbed Sgurr na Ciche and the other two Munros. We started at 300m and were into the cloud at 600m - as it turns out, both the other parties made navigational errors (one overshooting, one undershooting) so I was at the first summit first. I met the slow party near the second summit (they thought they were closer to the first) and so after climbing the second one, and being caught by the fast party, the slow group went back to the first and then down, while the fast party ran ahead to the third, along long ridge, and I followed behind, walking. Met them going down 200m from the final top as I was going up. Everyone met back at the pass, eventually, and then we moved our bags a further 2km down to the third campsite - lower down and a bit more midgy this time. The weather was improving though - the cloud was breaking up.

Knoydart Day 2 - Fully laden ascent of Luinne Bheinn and Meall Buidhe, from Mam Barrisdale (450m) which helped with the climb - but really tough going with the packs. After descending to sea level at Carnoch, we stopped for dinner at Soulies Bothy but it was mobbed with midges. After that, a late evening climb back up into a valley, pitching in almost darkness (and more midges!) Tough day with heavy pack (I do not have specialist lightweight kit, and was carrying most of the tent. My 65l rucksack was nearly full.)

Park Race in Battersea Park. Not too warm, dry but very humid. 26 controls for a 5km course - a mixture of middle-distance-style legs in some surprisingly tricky terrain, and some long oxygen-depleting runs. Made some small mistakes, probably 90 seconds overall, but nothing major.

Finished 16th out of 89 finishers. Disappointing - but the right people were faster on the night. Actual distance 6.12km.

Hill training. From West Croydon to Page Hill (Chipstead), Reigate Hill, Park Hill (Reigate), Leith Hill, Pitch Hill, Combe Bottom, King's Hills (Effingham), Box Hill and White Hill (Chipstead). Essentially a long circumnavigation of Dorking, through the Surrey Hills. This was our route (bar getting lost in the Croydon one-way system, and deviating off Park Hill): http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=139...

Time was moving time - total time from end-to-end was nine hours, including three big stops at Skimmington Castle, Shere and Box Hill.

LOK race at Grovelands Park. Hot and sunny evening. Lots of mistakes, both in crossing the field (the GPS reveals some very poor straight-lining) and in the later technical section, where I went in too fast, not anticipating the technicality. Actual distance run 6km - too far for a 4.8km park course!

My first run of any kind since the marathon 12 days ago and felt stiff, and out of fitness (the long, hot cycle to the venue won't have helped, though.) I was surprised I never got down to 4 min/km at any point, even on the flat, straight sections. I almost prefer the gentle pace of marathon running ;-)

Unexpectedly finished near the top of the results, which were surprisingly tightly bunched.
