Orienteering 1:49:51 [2] 7.98 km (13:46 / km)

A bit wet out there today, yet always better than being stuck inside. I enjoyed navigating today as there were plenty of features in the terrain. I think I should head back to Earl's trails though and practice more on just contours and counting reentrants and so forth.

Note

I just found an interesting audio on SciFri about ticks. I gleaned a couple of tidbits that were new to me. The medical community considers the evidence for chronic lyme disease to be very weak. Also there apparently is an effective treatment to clothing with permethrin that the military has been using to repel ticks from uniforms.

Running (Warm Up/Down) 20:00 [2] 2.25 km (8:53 / km)

Running (Tempo) 29:00 [4] 4.35 km (6:40 / km)
ahr:163 max:181

Nice and cool this morning. 6 x 4 min tempo with 1 min rest in between. My legs get real tired a little less than half way through and it feels like my pace suffers even if my heart rate stays high.

Running (Tempo) 20:00 [4] 3.25 km (6:09 / km)
ahr:159 max:178

When I first started, the morning was great and it felt so good to be outside. About halfway through the run I realized that while it isn't hot yet, it is still quite humid. My legs were really dragging on the last one, but no pain or soreness so I am glad. I am not going to skimp on electrolytes for the rest of the summer!

3 sets of pushups and crunches. One set of the crunches were reverse. Then did a couple of side planks held for 45 seconds a piece.

Orienteering race 28:44 [3] 2.0 km (14:22 / km)

I think Cemetery hill is a lot of fun. I had fun trading back and forth with two girls along the course. They were good and fast too. In the end Anna out sprinted me to the end. Great job Anna!

Orienteering race 1:21:10 [3] 3.9 km (20:49 / km)

A mass start, wow. That was fun. I was my most nervous all weekend at the start of this event. I was a little intimidated to be on Mount Tom and then to be starting at the same time as all these other great orienteers. It turned out great though. I had a few mistakes on the course. For the first control I ran up the road to the north west of the start to the intersecting trail. Then I tried to cut up to the next trail too early and discovered too late that I was actually still down below the long line of cliffs west of Goat Peak. So I climbed up the cliffs to get back on the trail. Not the recommended route! I got a little confused with all the cliffs in the region southwest of 2. I stayed a little too high on the way to 4 instead of getting down into the reentrant and following right to 4. After that I managed to slow down a little and improve my navigation. Although on 9 I saw the hill to the southeast of 9 and thought it was just a big knoll and ran hard for it only to realize later upon inspection of my map that I ran right by the actual control.
