Event: BATONA 500

Warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Warm up for the race.

Walked to the start with Rick. Ran back to registration. Walked back to the start. Its about 3KM

Orienteering 1:24:23 [4] 7.45 km (11:20 / km) +105m 10:35 / km
shoes: Reebok

Batona Day 1. Blue course - 7.45K, 105M
Very good weather. Sunny, ~65 deg F

Ran slowly and cautiously. Didn't have major problems.

Flubbed at few controls:

#6: Ran more west (few degrees left of the red line). Ended up in the big path on west. Ran to the path jct, ran on the path going east and turned southe at the path bend. Wasted 1:30 min

#7: Similar to #6, had to come back rom the N path ! Wasted 1:30 min.

#11: Ran way too much north to reach the path JCT. Should've gone straght! Near the control: hit the path at the norther ditch, path jct. The ditch seemed more stratighter than the way mapped. So, went in to the ditche looking for the control. After 20 secs, corrected the mistake. Wasted 30secs.

#15: Found the control at the lonely depression SW of my control. Took water there. Mistaken this depression for the northern depression (where the knoll is). So, SE looking for the control!. Then ran SW towards the ditch(path). Finally, wen back hesitently towards the control. Wasted 6mins!

The rest of the control were OK, just slow running with the blueberry bushes.

Total of 10 mins errors !

Running 49:37 [3] 5.0 mi (9:55 / mi)

Nice cool weather. Went to QTFM Parking lot with Hema. Hema ran with me 2 mins at the beginning and then just walked ther rest of the time.

Ran 10 laps.
Splits:

513,457,454,500,453
459,505,508,459,429

I averaged 5 mins per lap, except for the last lap, in which I just pushed and ran faster in 4 mins and 29 secs.

Each lap would be little over half a mile. I will be conservative and say the whole distance is 5miles.

In the 7th lap, for couple of mins, my upper left back started aching. I wonder how this ache comes and goes !

Running 42:00 [3]

Ran around the community sidewalk for 10 mins. Ran few laps in the QTFMarket parking lot for 30 mins.

I think the QTFMarket parking lot would be nice for interval training. It took around 2 mins 25 secs to run from one end to the other. I am guessing that would be little over 1/4th of a mile.

Orienteering race 1:38:00 [3] 6.0 km (16:20 / km) +230m 13:42 / km

White Clay Creek State Park
Not very cold - 52deg F - nice running weather. Red Course

I don't remember running in this park before.

Lack of running (training) in the last 2 weeks showed its effect on today's race. Couldn't keep running more than 3 mins at a time. Uphill climbing is very slow walk.

#5: messed up a bit. Went in to the pine trees and lower path before returning back to the control.

#6: bad route choice ? may be not!

#7: should've climbed down to the path right away!

#12: Took an unmapped path going east and ended up at the bottom of the steep contours. Walked north looking for the control. Finally looked at the compass and realized I am at the wrong side and had to walk south and west to the control

Will do more running this coming week to be ready for batona A-meet
