orienteering 1:02:13 [3] ****
spiked:8/13c shoes: O' Shoes

Yay orienteering! This was really fun. Super fun map!

Mistakes, but a lot of good legs on the type of terrain that's usually very challenging for me. I felt very focused and confident overall.

My mistakes were mostly caused by lack of confidence after momentarily losing contact. Kicking myself for number 6. I had just finished crossing a relatively feature-less area right before the control circle and felt that I may have drifted. I saw a rock feature I recognized about 25 meters to my left, and instead of losing a minute by going to it and taking a careful bearing into my control, I tried to fudge it. "Oh, there's a distinct marsh in front of me. And my control's on a cliff. I'll just stumble onto it. I'll be fiiiiiine!" It may have worked if I weren't on a steep, rocky hillside, but I should probably always play it safe in this type of terrain.

There were also some smaller mistakes, but I think 8 and 9 are more fun to write about!

Control 9 was a victory because I made a difficult route choice quickly and then moved on to think about other things. My biggest error in the NAOC sprint was from being distracted while I spent too much time agonizing over a route choice. So I felt like I redeemed myself.

I also executed 8 really well. I sometimes have a hard time simplifying in terrain where vegetation's a factor, but I did a good job picking out the most visible features in the terrain and finding them in real life. I even remembered the distinct marsh I'd found on my way to 5!

Next steps are:
1) being more confident coming into the control (not hesitating if the control isn't visible but the feature is),
2) recognizing featureless areas (like on my way to 6) and figuring out what I need to check off,
3) getting quicker at recognizing small contour features while running,
4) knowing when to pay a lot of attention to my fine compass.

Fun run with Naomi! Afterwards, I worked on Janji stuff for a few hours while she scrapbooked:)

Fun! Working on hamstrings, core, and lower legs while I was waiting for Naomi to come back. (She ran for 20.)

Yikes, this was hard! Night-o at hammond pond. Very un-confident. Need more night-o practice!
