cycling (on trainer) 1:23:59 [2]
shoes: New red &gray

I was planning to ride about 30 minutes, but I found that I was more comfortable sitting upright on the bike and pretending I was running; I did that most of the time and occasionally went back to a regular cycling position when I was tired of sitting up. Halfway through, I set the bike up a gear, and my legs feel fine.

orienteering race (Cliff Cave) 41:29 [3] *** 3.1 km (13:23 / km)
spiked:6/11c shoes: soccer shoes

cold, snowing.
1-a "ruin" that looks to me like just a pile of rocks. I was familiar with it from training a couple weeks ago, when I absolutely could not find it. This time, I used a veggie boundary as my attack point before I went into the woods. It was very thick on the edge of the field, and I fell twice trying to get through it. It helped having a marker on the pile of rocks.
2,3-trail runs to depressions, but I had to pay close attention so I didn't climb down into the wrong depression.
4-bearing, checked off middle of 2 depressions and trail bend before hitting the ditch. I need to work on taking bearings in thicker woods;even though the visibility was good, I would get distracted by trying to find a way through the brush and not pick a tree on my bearing to run to. I think it was sloppy of me not to try to concentrate on that, since I knew the trail bend would catch me. Relying on the trail bend would've been okay if I'd been going fast on the way to it, but I feel like I lost too much time by not concentrating on my bearing.
5-A slippery climb (snow on top of loose leaves) to the top of the hill, and the road and trails took me the rest of the way to the control.
6-Didn't get out of 5 fast enough. Since I could see the knoll before I got there, I should've planned my exit (one of my frequent problems). Got to run across a field but had to reenter the woods through some really sharp thorns. Caught my brother at the control but took too long planning my route again.
7-Got to the control circle okay, saw Nick hesitating, and so did I. I need to practice reading unusual contours mixed with ditches. I punched ahead of him and started for the next marker quickly.
8-It was slow going. When we got to the trail, I couldn't see the top of the small hill that was on the map. Nick caught up to me and started running for a distinct trail bend. I followed him and set a new bearing, but when I saw the marker, my bearing was off.
9-Had to go through dark green to get to the trail. Trail and road run until I got to the mouth of a huge cave and had to climb up a slippery slope next to it. I kept falling. First, I got to the wrong depression but looked down and recognized it by a rock in the middle. Hesitated as I ran around to my depression.
10-Took a modified bearing around a depression and went past it to my depression.
11-Took a trail run but made a wrong turn and came bback. I recognized where I was, but I wasn't as confident with my trail running between there and the control. Had a good run back to the finish.

cycling (on trainer) 52:45 [2]
shoes: New red &gray

Last Thursday, I hurt my foot playing basketball before practice, and it didn't go away after a few days of rest, so my coach suggested biking. My dad got out a bike and a trainer from the garage and set them up. I thought it was going to make my legs sore the first time, but I put it in an easy gear, and my legs feel fine.
