Orienteering Race 58:52 [3] 4.8 km (12:16 / km)

Pre-ran Green course from 'A' Meet. No technical problems. Attempted a wide right route on the one route choice leg, but it didn't really work out. Probably lost at least 2-3 minutes

Field Work 1:05:00 [2]

Picking up controls after the 'A' Meet with T. Moving very slowly which was a good thing since it was very hot and with the leaves not out, the sun beat down on you.

Event: HVO A-Meet

Orienteering Race 35:26 [3] 3.0 km (11:49 / km)

Preran the Brown course for the 'A' Meet. A couple of minor bobbles, but was able move pretty well during the run. Not pushing too hard.

Field Work 2:05:00 [3]

Hauling water and moving controls from Day 1 to Day 2 sites for 'A' Meet. Legs are real tired, but no other major problems.

Field Work 2:10:00 [3]

Setting out flags, control units, hauling water, streamering legs for tomorrow's 'A' meet at Surebridge. Weather continues to improve and woods are quickly drying out. Could it actually be too warm?

Field Work 1:40:00 [3]

Hauling water and placing stands for the Surebridge Challenge 'A' Meet. Weather is improving daily and today was very nice. Could be too warm on the weekend and have advised MD of the need for more water. Still a bit muddy in spots and water levels in ponds and marshes are still above normal, but the woods are in good condition.

Under the "do it once in a lifetime" convention, I came upon a couple of small critters in the woods. I first I thought bobcat, but a couple of steps later I realized it was a litter of coyote pups laying out in the warm sun near there den. There were at least 3 of them and 2 just froze and watched me from 5 feet away. My first thought. How cute!. My second thought. Where are the parents? No initial sign of them. Not wanting to disturb the pups, I backed off and went around them to the control site. While placing the stand, I heard one of the parents barking loudly about 50 meters off. I reminded myself coyotes don't attack full grown humans, but I wondered if that applied when it came to parents defending their young. Moved off with the parent continuing to bark until I was over 200 meters from the den. I informed the MD of the problem since the control site is within 20 meters of where I saw the pups.

If that wasn't enough, later on I got buzzed a couple of times by some pissed off hawks going between 2 later control sites. These were light colored with grey bellys so I couldn't tell what kind of raptor I was dealing with. Could be goshawks or marsh hawks, but wasn't sure. They came within 2-3 meters on a couple of passes, but I couldn't tell what was pissing them off. I would think it was too early for babies and I'm a little big for prey.

No, no bears to complete the trifecta. Looks like it will be an interesting weekend.
