Orienteering race 42:17 [3] 2.2 km (19:13 / km) +70m 16:35 / km

This was an embarrassingly bad performance. I had the wrong basic approach, and when it went bad, I doubled down. I was micro-navigating, and the result was that every leg became a major ordeal. Every few steps required map study. Features appeared in front of me that I couldn't recognize on the map. I got way off-route several times, and had to backtrack.

Reviewing the map later on, the contour features made complete sense, and al the stuff I couldn't understand earlier was right there on the map. And I couldn't believe how short the legs actually were! Just a dumb strategy for this course. I really want a do-over. I think another day on this and I could get it right.

Anyway, throwing out this day I managed second overall in the combined M65+ standings, behind Geraint Edmunds who was the class of the field.

Orienteering race 1:09:12 [4] 5.1 km (13:34 / km) +150m 11:50 / km
shoes: Spirit OLX (last)

Long course at CTOC Gold Rush. This was a disappointment. One easily avoidable mistake (a 180 error) took me out of contention. There was only one place I was able to get some speed going, taking the road and trail from 4 to 5, and on that leg I had the fastest split, but not by much. It turned out that cutting any of the corners slowed you down. 4th place, but a bronze in the U.S. Champs.

Orienteering race 16:16 [5] 2.2 km (7:24 / km)
shoes: Roclite 280-2015

CTOC Gold Rush Sprint. The first leg wasn't so good -- I need to figure out how to get my head in the game before the start. Then a good series, running well, looking ahead. Things started to fall apart around 10 and 11, and I couldn't remember which building was which and whether I'd made this or that turn yet. Then got it back together for a great run to 12, and on in. First in M65, but Dennis was a few seconds faster with a good run on Brown.
