Orienteering race 1:26:39 [4] 8.0 km (10:50 / km) +100m 10:12 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

QOC Beer Chase "Black" course. This was a lot of fun as usual. I took a more reasonable strategy than in previous chases, not trying to keep up with the fastest runners but going at a (relatively) easy pace with the next group. So I found I had plenty of kick left as the run progressed. I had pulled away towards the end of the second loop, but I found myself alone and couldn't believe there was no one chasing, wait a minute, something must be wrong! But it wasn't, and they caught up eventually due to my slowdown. The third loop was easy even in the beer haze, and I ran it pretty fast.

I fell for a couple of Ted's Black-course tricks, like not figuring out the "8" fork on the first control on the second loop, and not seeing the contours obscured by the circle and line on the next control, and stupidly, not getting the control number right on the one festooned with all the extra markers. But nothing was so out of whack that it couldn't be taken in stride. Certainly no complaints.

Road running 39:00 [3] 4.4 mi (8:52 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

Started out towards the regular perimeter road route, picked up Tom W. at his turn-around, and ran with him back the other way around towards the Fitness Center. Then headed solo down the parkway entrance road to the perimeter road for the rest of the run. Good conversation. We talked about the increasing percentage of women in big road races. And about the increasing proportion of women to men in U.S. colleges. Can we make a claim about the competitiveness of women across the board in the U.S.? What about in orienteering?
