10 AM

Cycling 1:35:16 [3] 21.8 mi (4:22 / mi)

Cycling from Leytonstone to Bedfords Park (bit north of Romford) for the HAVOC Level D score event. Particularly windy on the way back along the godforsaken Eastern Avenue.

Score orienteering race 48:42 [5] 8.94 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 300

HAVOC Level D Score Event and SWELL, Bedfords Park (30 controls, 15 on each side of the map, no returning to odd numbered controls once switched to even / visa-versa)
Fairly low key local orienteering on a relatively easy area where the main challenge was vegetation; encountered a few bits of brackeny grot and got floored by scrub and brambles on a rough open stretch at one point. Water was also occasionally an issue but nothing in comparison to yesterday.

From before the start I thought I'd have a go at getting all controls and upon getting the map it became clear that this was eminently do-able. The fact that all controls scored the same meant that there was less need for / point to control prioritisation.

A few hesitations and pauses so I probably could have got round in under 46, if not under 45.

Trail/off road running race 50:08 [5] 10.64 km (4:43 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 300

Brutal 10, Long Valley
I have to admit that my main, slightly materialistic / cynical reason for doing this was to win vouchers to pay for my next pair of road running trainers, which I managed. That said, I got a lift there and back with a work & university friend who also ran, so there was a social element.
On the whole very fun, and particularly brutal. The first half seemed wetter than the second, and coming out of the second stretch of ice-cold water (about 100 yards worth of it in this instance), I felt that my feet had been amputated and replaced by ice cubes. Annoyingly I did go off course at one point (hence the distance being a bit over 10km) but managed to take the lead fairly soon after returning to the course and extended over the second half. Having a shower afterwards, I realised how many ice and bramble cuts my legs had acquired during the run.

Cycling (Commute) 36:09 [3] 8.5 mi (4:15 / mi)

Virtually the usual, except I was force to divert off Stratford High Street down Abbey Lane and then back up along Rick Roberts Way due to road works on the A11 - I'd never (knowingly) previously been on these streets so this proved to be a interesting, if brief, bit of east London exploration.
