Core 30:00 [3]

Note

Heading home tomorrow morning. Can't even squish all the great memories and experiences into one little post, there were way too many! I learned so much this summer and can't wait to apply it the rest of the year.
Next stop: Maritimes...on Thursday...... Yay home time!!

11 AM

Running (hiking ) 3:07:35 [3] 15.47 km (12:07 / km) +975m 9:13 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Inspire 11

(Count ~ 2hr 30 of intense walking/running)

Run/Hike up to the top of Ben Macdui with Hammer, and then around the cliffs to Cairngorm with Etoile! Since summiting Ben Nevis didn't happen two years ago, the 2nd tallest mountain in the UK was a must-do.
Lovely panoramic views and not so lovely 45 mph winds!

Friday Aug 7, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Hour (ish) hike up to Cairngorm mountain with the (extended) fan, followed by a fun WOC banquet!

S6D #4!
Used a new compass today with a turnable housing... I think it helped with my compass bearings but it was slow since I wasn't the most efficient at using it. Gotta train with it a bit more to get the system down pat.
Today's race went well like yesterday, a few small mistakes but no major blow ups. Lost some time on 5 when I took one veg boundary too early and was a little confuzzeled until I realized I had to go further. Hesitation on 9 in a bunch of weird veg stuff that I should have ignored. (In the wide words of Emma S, I am stronger than the vegetables!!)
On 11 I tried to cut a corner on a trail and ended up going way too far to the right, almost to 12. Needless to say my leg from 11 to 12 was speedy :P
15 was also a little slow because I couldn't match the contours up very well. I think both of these mistakes wouldn't have happened if I had chosen safer routes. The woods were lovely just like yesterday. Super fun to blast through and work on tempo changes!

I think that's a wrap for my S6D races... my shin is pretty sore and I don't want to kill it on the sidehills the next 2 days. Now to run a mountain with Daddio!

Day 3 at Darnaway!
This was a lot more fun than day 2... I didn't even get wet feet! :O
The beginning was a little slow, getting used to the terrain and scale. I made a mistake on 5 where I was too far to the right and had to go farther past to a trail to make a better attack. I also made a mistake on 7 coming in off a trail (in the bracken that was taller than me) and I was to the left by a little. After that I didn't really make mistakes and I started to pick up the pace on the easy part of the leg, focusing on tempo changes when I got into the circle. Lovely woods to run along in! I didn't really notice my shin during the race, only on steep side hills and after cooling down.

Congrats to Izzy on a numba 1!! :D Zamnnn!

Running warm up/down 9:00 [1] 1.4 km (6:26 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Stretching 12:00 [1]

lots of movement, trying to wake up the legs

Orienteering race 20:57 [5] *** 3.64 km (5:45 / km) +60m 5:19 / km

Open Sprint in Forres - Open Women (Course 2a)
Fun, tricky, and lots of climb! At the start, I registered the fact that the punches will be hanging when the lady told us, but when I got to the first CP I was super confused about where the punch stand was. (?!?) Took a second to remember that little detail (#BrainFart)
Made a routechoice error between 6 and 7, and then got stuck by some traffic trying to cross the road. I didn't feel like I got into a great flow, mostly because of the hanging punches and tired legs.
I read ahead well and pushed enough to place 1st on my course! :D
My shin is pretty sore at the moment, hopefully a little ice is all it needs.

Stretching 7:00 [0]

1 PM

Orienteering race 1:08:55 [3] *** 6.5 km (10:37 / km) +159m 9:27 / km
16c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

Stage 2
This didn't go as great as yesterday... Made 2 mistakes that were way too big. I relocated quickly on both of them but just couldn't find the CP. I was very close to them in both cases, probably ran right past 12 and didn't see it in the ferns (couldn't see anything really in there, not even your feet that were about to sink into 3 ft of mud...)
The climb also killed me today and too much side hill-ing kind of aggravated my shin.
On a positive note, I think I did a good job of trying to forget about my mistakes and focus on the race.

Running warm up/down 8:17 [1] 1.18 km (7:01 / km) +50m 5:47 / km

Scottish 6 Day, stage 1
This course was so much fun!! Made a few small mistakes, one compass related one, another where there were too many confusing trails that I should have ignored and focused on the contours, and another based on not planning the whole leg. I'm happy that I relocated faster than I have been recently, so no huge blow ups.
I really enjoyed this race and terrain! (Except the area with soooOOOoo many FDFs!)

Running warm up/down 13:00 [1] 2.1 km (6:11 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Stretching 15:00 [1]

6 PM

Orienteering race 15:45 [5] *** 3.6 km (4:23 / km)
15c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Well, check that off the bucket list! First WOC race!
It was such a great experience to race the sprint at WOC for Canada, super fun!
The quarantine was a little stressful, mostly because it was full of very tall people and I'm a very not tall person. I wasn't really that nervous on the start line though, and the GPS didn't affect me at all.
I lost some time here and there, mostly from routchoice and being quite tired (being sick all week most likely, my lungs were not super happy)
I definitely could have ran harder if I hadn't been so tired but I'm happy with my run :)
Time to start running in the woods again!

Map Study 10:00 [0]

Looking at maps on the train as well as with the team in the evening. Forres maps, Elgin and some others
3 PM

Orienteering 32:00 [2] 4.28 km (7:29 / km) +13m 7:22 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Inspire 11

On the WOC sprint model map with the team. Took a spill over a fence, glad to have that out of the way so I won't do it in the race! :P
The sprint may include some funny fence crossings that involve hay bales, gotta bring out the #SteepleNation for those.
4 PM

Orienteering 6:51 [1] 0.85 km (8:01 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Inspire 11

On the relay model with the others. Super fun and very tricky sand-dune area. Tori and I went all Chariots of Fire along the beach.
