trail run 14:30:00 [3]

La Cloche trail with Goose. Perfect trail conditions but hotter then expected!

So grateful to have friends that support us on these crazy adventures.

This was my true blue post baby goal - to run this loop and under 14 hours. I knew it would be tricky given the sleep deprivation but I also knew I could do it. Bob also wanted to give it a shot now that vertigo seems to be less of an issue. (Touch wood). I used Diez Vista as my check in and I felt really good post race. GRR was my last long run (not the perfect taper but it worked). And really tapered my best ever with rest and massage (which I don’t do very well).

Goose kindly offered to run with me and coach offered to stay with Hank (partially because he’s honestly the best baby ever and also because she has the kindest heart ever). The plan was set.

We started at 6:30 (I think), shortly after Bob and we promised to start ever so slow, walking all the uphills and saving the juice for the end. Before we left the campground and started at the trailhead I already had ditched the toque. It was stinking hot. (Suppose to be 15 and overcast. Try 28 and sunny)

Trail conditions were near perfect and I knew in my heart of hearts right off the bat that this was going to be a good run for me. We chatted and chatted and chatted (poor goose) and oogled at the views. Good gawd, I love this trail. By the time we reached the Crack it was warm. We filled at almost all proposed water spots and then some.

Highlights for me included:
-ham and cheese Sammie’s
-chips and cheese bun Sammie’s
-omg Honey Stingers and endurance tap on top (you’re welcome)
-the views
-the wildlife spottings: 1 moose, 1 Deer, 1 porcupine, 1 snake
-the company (I think I called Angus ‘Hank’ several times)

After about km 59 We took a breather and while filling water bladders I rolled my ankle. Angus continued on and I caught up. I honestly didn’t think much of my ankle and carried on. It hurt but I needed to get back to camp and asap (anyone who has ever nursed a baby can feel my pain!!) We were in a bit of a pickle because Angus needed to get caught up on hydration but I needed so badly to get back. We both agreed that I should go ahead. Away I went. I regretted being on my own when I went off trail or when I heard something in the bush so that’s when I’d start singing Baby Beluga. I was doing really well being away from Hank for over 13 hours but that’s when I started to panic. I just wanted to be back so I was moving at a decent pace.

The last stretch when moving counter clockwise is always the hardest. It’s not particularly scenic, you’re hurting physically and I swear the last 10km feel like FOR.EV.ER. I was pumped to see the bridge and not need my headlamp and SO excited to see Hank (and Bob) but they were so confused to see me because goose had the tracker. Ummm hello cheering squad?! Hahaha

It wasn’t until I took my shoes off in the shower that I realized I did a number on my ankle - it was huge and starting to get sore.

Goose came in shortly after and we had a warm meal prepared for us of rice, chicken and Veggies. Complete with chocolate milk and miss Vickie’s. What a day!

Special thanks to Coach for spoiling Hanky all day with her sissy! We. Are. Blessed.

Turns out I earned a fracture at the distal fibula. It’s amazing what a determined Mama can do. ;) The report reads as tiny (0.3cm) so here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

Looking so forward to running this again in the fall and getting that sub 14 hours! 5th time is a charm!!
