Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Chase

Anna

1. Couldn't find #1 on the map, even though I read the course notes. Followed Tom Strat until I figured it out.
2. To left fo marsh, around hill.
3.
4. Across marsh, read vegetation well.
5.
6. No attack point
Hard to stay in contact with map, especially because of rocks. Used aspen patches once we got close.
7. Went right of spur-top, got some water on the trail, ran toward #9 before we realized it wasn't 8.
8. Followed Jim Eagleton.
9. Did not plan ahead
Did not check features en route
Took a chance
Ran too fast
Read map too late
Bad map reading
Followed others
Followed him again on the rocky spur. We came out by the big aspen grove to the west of the control, and some other people caught up. I thought that's where we were, but I didn't want to leave the group--I know that's the opposite of what I should be thinking. Instead, I waited for Jim to run into the woods and followed him.
10.
11. Bad compass work
I was up ahead a little with Malcolm Wyatt-Mair, and I read the first few knolls pretty carefully. When I was going around the last one before the bare rock, I neglected my compass and didn't curl around all the way. I chased Malcolm into the control.
12. Bad compass work
Forgot my compass again! Went to the boulders on the left instead of the ones below the knoll.
13. Liked the wide-open running.
14. Beat Jim Eagleton to the control, so he had to wait for me to fumble with the punch.
