Race Evaluation

2001 Billygoat Run:

tdgood

1. Overall Comments: I was still recoving from a bad sprained ankle. Any run that I finished without twisting it again would be a good run. No Plan. At start, saw #1 is long way away. Followed crowd. Got in with Eddie and Joe B. Having trouble keeping up because the trails are so rocky and I can run recklessly on my ankly. As soon as we cut into the woods (about the time I figured out where we are) I lost them because I had to be real careful of footing.
2. Followed Crowd. Saw people leaving 2 as I approached.
3. I actually looked at my map at this point in order to see what to skip. Leaning towards skipping 5. Overhill. Little to the right had to cut back.
4. Followed crowd. With Peggy at this point. Confer with her on what to skip. We agree on skipping 5. This year I wasn't going to skip unless I had a crowd with me.
5. Punch 4 and immediately run wrong directio and cross stream. Peggy says something about "don't want to go that way". Ok, so I cross back and follow her. SKIP 5
6. Take trail to 6. Make sure there is a group that is also skipping 5. Pass Mark Dominie who chides me for running slow. First one in group to leave trail. Get to far right and one of last to the control.
7. I haven't been orienteering and whenever I attempt to I screw up. I decided I am in a good group. Peggy, Bernie, and a bunch of other faceless people. I am at the back of the back. I like it there.
8. Follow crowd. Still last in group. Miss last little trail to clearing. Follow Peggy up hill side and through woods to control. Apparently this is the water stop. Not much here. There are 5 cookies out on a plate. I pour some gatorade from a container. I hope that it wasn't someone personal one but couldn't tell.
9. Still in back of group. I start to feel a couple of muscles and worry about cramping. Shift stride accordingly. Follow group. 1/2 the time I don't know where we are. The other 1/2 I don't care where we are. Follow, follow, Follow. Thanks group. I See a lot of people way off to the south of control 9. My group goes right to it.
10. Follow Peggy. Still back of group.
11. Run to swamp. First person turns back after looking at it. Group decides to run around. Another person passes me and runs across swamp. I decide to make up some ground on my group. Crossed swamp. A little deep but most of it on log. Person ahead of me runs along far edge. I decided to climb and start to, but looks like control is down low I go back down and fall/trip into marsh. Almost go all the way under. Splash my way around.
12. Followed group around trails. Now I am getting tired. Still back of pack. As soon as leave trail, footing bad and I fall farther behind. Soon I will either have to speed up or loose group.
13. Followed group. Hey where did Peter Gagarin come from. On no, he is pulling the group off to the right. Oh well, who am I to complain. I am not navigating anyway. I just hope he doesn't speed the group up. WHOAAAA, There is Tim Good coming up from behind.
14. Tim Goes blowing by. The SCUM, he is going to speed the group up. AAAAGGGHHHH, there goes my group. By By.
15. By the time I hit the trail the group is gone. Now I actually have to orienteer. Take trail around to just past pond. See Peggy leaving control area as I leave the trail.
16. Back to the trail.EVERYBODY THAT IS AHEAD OF ME EXPLAIN who it is that 1/2 of water is gone and the cups are not open. I have to open the cup and a brand new jug. I will not drink out of any open jugs anymore since everyone is drinking directly from them.
17. Took trail around to the right. No pack anymore so no reason to hurry. Legs getting tired. Worried about cramping.
18. Somebody passes me. Follow them to 18. Just before 18 I lose sight of them. I decide I should orienteer. See a huge rock and think, hmmmm, that should be on the map. Turns out that was the control feature. Jeff Saeger passes me. I scold him for drinking from the jug.
19. Take trail around to south trail. Cut into woods. Getting tired so moving very cautiously (and slow) in woods. A little off to the right but knew where I was.
20. Trail around. Mihai goes running by. I figure he must have started late.
21. Along marsh. Just short of control. Got first cramp (and not where I expected. Stood and stretched for a couple of minutes. Saw Nadim. He just kept on going around the marsh. Finally could walk again. At this point, walked most of the rest of the course. Took trail on right side of water.
22. Gimme control. People just jogging by me.
23. Leaving 22, saw Nadim going the wrong way around the lake. Cramped up again just below 23. Took several minutes until I could move again. In that time about 5/6 people went by me. Jim Eagleton is the only one I remember.
F. Walked in. See Nadim going wrong way again. Samantha Saeger passes me.
