1. | Straight | ||||||
2. | Up and over. | ||||||
3. | I thought to run along the water but it looked too muddy. I paralleled it somewhat. Instead of using the trail to go up the spur I stayed to the left and ran along the hillside to save climb. I spiked it but am not sure it was the best route.
4. | I went completely around the first reentrant to the next spur. I could see the control from there. Descending I lost it again but knew where to go.
5. | +02:45 | This was the crux of the course and I screwed it up. My thought coming out of #4 was to go down the reentrant and turn right, go a little way and cross the stream. I turned right one too many times and climbed an extra ridge in the process. I relocated fast. A wire fence helped that. I hesitated crossing the next big reentrant trying to figure out a way down. In the end I cut right too far and then ran through the bottom of the deep reentrant to an intersection. It was up and over from there.
6. | I used the trail then ran straight, using the reentrant tops to keep me on target. I was a little off at the end but close enough to see it.
7. | I angled over to the trail but didn't aim for the tangent in case I got off; I didn't want to miss it. I went completely around on the trail.
8. | I stayed high and to the right, reading my way across the tops of reentrants mostly. At the end, I started to loose confidence so when I hit the stream, I cut left to play it safe. Had I gone straight, I'd have hit it well. To finish, I ran from a prominent stream bend through the stream to the correct reentrant and in.
9. | Straight except for the fence in the way.
10. | +02:00 | Navigated to the pond fairly well though I did go through a stretch of fighting thorns. Coming off the west side of the pond, I didn't take a bearing and winged it. I missed to the right and didn't understand how for a while.
11. | I went fairly straight and used fence intersections effectively. At the end, Randy and someone else on Blue were just leaving the rootstock.
12. | +01:15 | I ran straight but lost confidence in the water believing that I'd drifted left into the marsh. Not having used a pace count, I let myself be drawn off to a rootstock on drier ground to my right. From there, I used the trail to the trail bend and went in.
13. | I really didn't think I was going the right direction and stopped more than once to recheck my compass bearing across the deepening marsh. I used what seemed to be animal paths through the reeds. I couldn't run. I kept thinking I was wrong because I thought if the path was correct, it'd have a muddy look to it but it didn't.
14. | Straight | ||||||
15. | +00:10 | I popped out a bit to the right and took a little while to realize it.
16. | I didn't see the way around the the left. I went through the fight which wasn't so bad.
17. | Fairly straight, though a little tentative.
18. | Out to the road on the well worn path.
F. | I tried to muster a better sprint but wasn't in good enough shape to give it a real effort. |
