Race Evaluation

Anza-Borrego Desert O-Fest, Day 1: Blue

jeffw

1. Could see the small spur then the 2 hills leading to the control.
2. Came out to the road, then ran along the cliffs way too far. Had to work my way back to the control.
3. My first choice ended in a dead end. Lost some time here.
4. When I was on the flat area near the control, I searched too far down.
5. Overshot the control and had to come back.
6. Ran down the long spur. Saw Ross Burnett behind me. He checked for the control at the boulders. I kept going, since I recognized them. Spiked the control.
7. Ran down to the road and up one of the washes. When I got close, saw Ross come out way over to my left. Went there to the control.
8. Went to the 2 contour hills, but wasn't 100% sure where I was. Could see my control from there.
9. Major route choice control. Went north along the ridge through the saddle. Wasn't sure where I was as I pushed through the complicated stuff. Went over a ridge, which I recognised, and saw the control.
10. Saw the cliff after I left control 9. Ran for the road. Pace counted from the road (something I don't usually do) and saw Ross Burnett run to the hill on my right, but I thought I was looking for smaller hills. It was the correct direction.
11. Ran down to the flattish area with all the dry streams. Ran on a bearing from there with Mark Everett and a BAOC Russian guy in front of me. I was a little left of the control.
12. Ran across the flats to the big ridge in the distance. The tiny Mark Everett in the distance went up the spur just left of the line. I went up the fatter one on the right. Went over and down one of the big spurs. Saw Ross again on the next spur over. Crossed to that one. From there I could read the little skinny spur which I used to attack the control.
13. Ran for the road, roughly aiming left of the road split.
14. Ran for the finish chute trying to stay ahead of Ross.
F. Big finish. Big line a the download station so I skipped it for awhile and came back.
