Race Evaluation

NEOC Club Champs: Blue

dness

1. Took trail to west, then followed stone wall.
2. Took PG's route to trail, but I ventured across the swamp. Was surprised to reach the control as soon as I did.
3. +05:00Whoops. Contoured around the left. By heading too far east, I ended up doing a considerable amount of laurel bashing.
4.
5. +02:00I was on the ridge to the right of the correct reentrant, but I looked right and saw a really green reentrant. Checked it out first.
6. Slightly S of PG's route. Ran into Sam at the control.
7. Had a complete brain fade when I reached the control area. Was that stream I crossed the trickle or the blue line? I went down the nose, looking all around. Then I decided to use the big building to get me on the correct latitude. Bingo. Ross punched in about the same time.
8. Ross & I took similar lines, E, then N. Of course he got there first.
9. +01:00Ross disappearing into the distance. This took me longer than it should have -- I was hesitant on the edge of the spur.
10. +15:00Hoo boy. What a disaster. I started thinking I was going from 10 - 11 and was having trouble figuring out why I wasn't seeing green. And then I hit the fence. Oh. I reached the control area, but didn't see the control. I kept on trying to reorient, but somehow always went in slightly the wrong direction from the points I was guessing (which I believe were all correct).
11. +08:00Wandered a bit to the left, but used the cliff on the other side of the marsh to orient myself. I spiked the control. Except it had the wrong code. Confused, I reoriented to the N and came back to find another blue runner scratching his head. I pointed him to the control with the wrong code and he decided it was right. Jeff Saeger was there, too, and pointed out that the control code was for the 1st control on his course.
12. +02:30Basically, my plan was the same as PGs. Alar passed me and I followed him off the trail. We were slightly right of the circle, and picked up the same blue runner I encountered at 11. I wandered less than they.
13. Another wrong control code, but since Alar punched and went at the same time I didn't waste any time.
14. Plan: E, then S. What happened: I followed tracks S, then decided to go E. BIG mistake. Alar made the same one.
15.
16. S to trail. Paused when I got to a "lake" in the trail. Didn't stop the blue runner behind me who went right through.
17. To big trail on E, then back in. Mistook the water for pavement and went in. Dang.
18. +10:00Beats me why I didn't go back to the trail when I thought of it.Instead, went W to other trail, only followed it a little bit, because for some reason I felt like laurel bashing. Ended up cutting back and hitting the N trail at the ditch. Ran it to a logging road W of the control. Took the road, saw a height of land to the left, but it overlooked the stream at a U-bend. The contours don't seem right here... I turned around and hoped to find the control by going S. Lucky.
19. Out of energy -- went to the road.
20. Walking. Followed trail to N of control and through the dense forest. Spiked it.
21. Wandered in general direction but took way too long to get to the trail. Followed it S until I could see the school, then cut into the woods & guessed a direction.
F. Apart from the control code issues, an excellent course. Don't know why I like the map as much as I do, given all the laurel and water. Thanks, Ian.
