PNWOF Relays: Leg 3 (Green)

jjcote

1.
2. Started out too far to the left, and corrected OK, but when I climbed the ridge, I could see the reentrant on the back, but didn't see the control in it at first. Looked around briefly, then came back and spotted it the second time.
3. This was kind of a vague feature. Stopped at almost eactly the right place, swung my head around, and spotted it just behind me to the left.
4. Kristin Ritzenthaler was ahead of me on this leg, and I saw a lot of her for the rest of the race. She went to far left, I was right on.
5. Crossed the cattle grate and went east on the road for a little, and attacked straight south to the control. Caught Steve Fluegel, who had started a while before me.
6. Dumb. Attacked badly from the cliffs, and wound up at a boulder near #12, but found no control. KR was runing around nearby, and I spotted a control and ran to it, only to discover that it was #12. Oh well, at least I knew exactly where I was. As I was running from #12 to #6, KR was heading for #12 -- don't know whether she went all the way there or not.
7.
8. Got to a bunch of rocks OK, but had trouble figuring out which one was which, as did KR, who arrived right behind me. I figured it out first, but things seemed funny in here.
9. Decided to go straight at it, but didn't do such a great job of reading features, and drifted right. Hit the trail just after KR ran by on it. Attacked from the same place she did, which turned out to the wromg place, as we soon found orselves too far, almost at the E-W trail north of the control. Swung around, and she was already punching and headed off.
10.
11. Gained a little on KR, and spotted some other people.
12. A bit right of the line, looking for the trail, behind Michael Davies. Caught up to KR (who had gone straight) just before the control, and remarked that we had been there before.
13. Passed Clare Durand. I hung a left after the cattle grate and went further up the trail the the others did, and arrived at about the same time. Caught up to Ole Bergset.
14. Started the leg a few steps behind the others, but they got drawn off by another control, on a big rock ENE of the correct one. Looked wrong to me, and I hesitated, reading my map until I saw MD over there looking puzzled, and I saw where we were and went left to the proper control.
15. Pushing to stay ahead of the gang, led by OB. Just went straight at it, and only had to turn right slightly at the end.
16. Scary leg: I had three people in hot pursuit, and I was looking for an imaginary feature. Had to slow down to spot it, but they proably just kept an eye on me.
17. Missed a little to the left, and hit the trail. Easy to correct, but OB, KR, and MD were coming straight in at it when I got there.
18. Pushed hard, and came across the trail to the left of the first rock. Good, read them 1, 2, 3, and got it.
19. The other three were looking around the second rock, so I tried to look a litle confused as I hightailed it out of there. Glad the boulder that the control was on was tall!
20. To the trail, and ran as hard as I could to stay ahead...
F. ... but they didn't show up for a while.
