Race Evaluation

BAOC: Big Basin: Blue

1. +03:00I didn't immediately find the low trail and started climbing. A horrible route choice.
2. Straight, using the trail through the saddle of course.
3. Hit the road a bit far left and didn't anticipate the impassable dirt wall on the other side of it. (Since it's not mapped.) Ran around the bend, then took the trail to the corner and cut across to the road again. Used small reentrant as attackpoint.
4. +08:00Road to rough open, found the general area pretty quickly, but spent 6-8 minutes looking for the misplaced control. Then finally gave up and looked for 5. I then found 4 close to where 5 was supposed to be.
5. Since I had found 4 so close to where 5 was supposed to be, I didn't think to look for 5, which is good since apparently it was also misplaced.
6. A bit of zig-zagging through the yellow looking for the reenttrant, then finally found the W-most yellow on the spur and hit the reentrant from there.
7. +00:30Straight, hesitated a bit when on the last spur. Should have read the contours better.
8. Straight, using the upcoming vegetation to lead me in. (Control was at the tip of it.)
9. Straight, saw the control when coming over the spur.
10. +00:30Crossed the stream early and ran to the wrong stumps first, then realized I was too far E.
11. Didn't like the green stuff or the stream too much, so I sprinted to the road and took it instead. It's 250m longer, and was probably not worth it. (I had the best split by 5 seconds on this leg.)
12. Straight, a bit confused by all the green.
13. Up to the trail then attacked from trail bend. 120' climb.
14. Down to stream junction and up into the flattish area. Saw shallow reentrant through the green.
15. +01:00Up through gully then spur with reentrant in it. Then across the shelf and down the correct spur. Hesitated when on the spur since I didn't want to descend too far and have to climb back up.
16. Tried to veer left but pretty much straight down into gully. According to the black race data recorder, I lost the foot transmitter just after starting to climb the other side. I thought 16 and 17 were not very interesting controls, and a bad idea considering how close to the start they are. After climbing 100', I hit the trail and tried to figure out where I was on it. I used the turns and headed into the woods on the other side, contouring into the reentrants. Found the control on top of a small flat rock that should probably not have been mapped.
17. Contouring / climbing.
18. Up to the road, then out onto ridge. Noticed that the foot transponder was missing and wondered how much it cost to replace.
19. Stayed high. Not a great time, but better than Martin's who missed low.
20. Contoured climbingly and down the spur. Probably could have climbed less without missing it.
21. Stayed high again (it worked before!) In retrospect, it would have been better to run down and back up again, despite the 160' climb that would have incurred.
22. Contoured ascendingly and down the spur.
23. No good attack point, hesitated.
F. Trail run.
