Race Evaluation

Colorado 5-Day: Day 2: Red

jjcote

1. Got the finish area all set up, and decided to run early, with Nancy running late. Walked over to the start and told Sandy that I'd take the first available Red start time. She looked at her list, pondered a moment, then said, "Oh, start now!". I turned to see people leaving the start line, so I ran over and grabbed a Red map. Talk about a flying start! Then I fell into the normal trap of not wanting the other lemmings to get ahead, so I just barrelled off in the right direction with no plan, not counting anything. After a couple of hundred meters I saw bare rock to my right, and started paying attention. Spiked the control, but I had written the Blue codes on my card, so I was momentarily baffled when I got to the first control, and it had the wrong code even though I knew I was in the right place. Looking at the cluesheet on my map cleared things up.

4. Along the fence for a bit, then up the big reentrant. Slight miss: spotted teh cliff to the NNE, but didn't see it on the map and went there first.
5. Slow climbing, but an easy time picking off features.
6.
7. Got to the circle fine, hesitated for a few seconds to sort out what rock was what, then went to the right one.
8. Didn't bother with trails, just went straight (stayed a bit to the right to reduce climb).
9. Left of the line to the meadow, past the ruin and up to the control.
