Race Evaluation

Colorado 5-day Day 1: Red

jjcote

1. Ran very late in the day, missed most of the rain. Wore T-shirt and running shorts, which made Nancy think I was going to get hypothermia, but it was just right. Off a bit to the right, found the pit/pile and corrected.
2. Doing just fine for 95% of the leg, but got off a smidge to the left at the end, wrong side of the big rock knob. Turned hard right to go under the south side of the cliff, but then spaced out and went 100 m to the east, down the spur, looking at other rocks. Reentrant to the north didn't seem to have the right shape.
3. Right around the hilltop.

9. Doing absolutely fine until I got close. Initially was off to the SSE. looking at some other rocks under the numeral "10", but then relocated and got to a rock that looked right. I still can't find it on the map, though. Went to the next rock NW, and there it was. What was I looking at? Something isn't right there.
10. Barrelled down the reentrant, then turned and saw the control over my left shoulder. I had heard that there was an odd conrtol, and wondered if this was it.

12. Got to the circle fine, but there was no control in the reentrant. Hmm, where could I be? Saw some tracks coming downhill and followed them up into the bushes to find the flag higher than expected and rather hidden.
13. Got to the circle, but the detail was hard to read. ot on some high ground to assess my position and spotted the flag just below me in a crack. Technically I guess the "saddle" here refers to the fact that the control is between two dot knolls, but I think it would have been best to pick a different location for it.
14. As I left the control, I saw the jury coming in to take a look at #13. I was stylin' as I went by them, but I was heading NE. Finally looked at my map and looped around, picking my way down a nasty reentrant.
15. Got a little low and to the right, confused about which aspen grove was which.
16. Dumb. Went directly to the right spot, couldn't distinguish between dot knolls and boulder clusters, and started looking at them all. The first or second one I looked at was the rigt one, but I failed to go far enough around to the north foot, and then looked at a bunch of others before relocating off of the bare rock again.
17. South around the big knob.
