Race Evaluation

Colorado 5-Day: US Night-O Champs: Red

Spike

1. Uphill, at altitude and a tricky looking leg...I took it very easy.
2.
3. Since it was flat, I was able to move pretty well. I tried to read everything along the way. I checked off all of the contour features, but I didn't recognize the little green area half way along the leg or the big green area near the control.
4. When I hit the first trail after leaving 3 I saw an unmapped junction. I stopped and looked at my map. The last couple of hundred meters to the control was fun. The area was open and you could read the contours pretty easily even though the area was fairly flat.
5. I thought about going all the way to the fence at the edge of the map. Then I noticed that it would probably be easier to attack the control from the series of reentrant junctions directly north of the control.
6. I lost contact -- not a lot, but I was off by about one reentrant (maybe 50-60 meters). That was enough that things didn't fit and I lost confidence. I also saw a lot of people milling about. I came to the contol very slowly and then didn't see the marker even when I was not more than 15 meter from it (it was behind some smaller pines from my approach). I stopped and looked at the map (within the control circle!), then saw the marker.
7. Ouch, fell down on the way to seven. No harm.
8. The control wasn't where I expected it. I wonder if it was hung right? It felt to melike it was one reentrant further south.
9. Simple orienteering from here to the finish. I tried to hold my h.r. under 160, not wanted to get tired with just 12 hours to go before the relays.
10. Walter Signethaler was just behind me on the trail. He was making a lot of noise; working hard. I felt a bit lazy.
11. I saw a lot of people between ten and 11. It seemed like everyone was heading almost due west. I tried to stick closer to the straight line.
