Race Evaluation

BAOC China Camp: Blue

ParkSchool

1. A little hesitant getting started. Drifted S of stream initially, then corrected and crossed stream, picked up yellow and followed E boundary to control.
2. Still getting used to new terrain. Did succeed in finding white between green N of trail, but wound up below control.
3. Roughly contouring. Was looking for control in yellow before realizing that I was looking at description for #2. Found quickly after that.
4. N to trail, E after bend, hit yellow after crossing stream.
5. Left of knoll, then directly to bag.
6. Around on trail to N bend, then up slope keeping green on L.
7. +08:00S to trail, but failed to recognize small clearings and got too high. Headed N from base of large clearing but hit top of reentrant instead of anticipated spur. Incorrectly thought I was W of control and ran down spur to E of control. Very tiring and discouraging leg.
8. +01:30Struggled back up slope passing E of flat open knoll, then inexplicable started heading for control 9 before realizing my error at lower E-W trail. Ran trail until I crossed large reentrant, then down to control.
9. W until hitting stream conveniently at fork, then straight to bag.
10. +04:00Long climb, then failed to find indistinct trail W of open knoll. Headed N until I hit possible trail leading down spur, but decided I was heading down more southern spur. Fought way back to correct spur, then overran control catching myself on big bend in trail.
11. Down trail, along stream to fork, then S of knoll before hitting S edge of yellow.
12. Excellent running through yellow parallel to road. Recreational control on boulder cluster a comforting landmark. Angled up across reentrant hitting trail just above control.
13. Straight down spur to trail and road. Contoured around W side of hill.
14. Retraced steps, crossed road.
15. W to road. Welcome stop for water, then up slope to indistinct trail and around.
16. Over spur. Briefly confused when bag not visible at W edge of green. Then figured out that I was mentally including the neighboring distinct tree in the green patch.
17. Over spur again, then down reentrant. Actually wound up a little N of control.
18. +01:30Follow trail to road, then pick up trail past bend in road. Passed marsh on R, but then failed to identify vegetation boundary and climbed too high and too far N. Hit trail running up spur, then had to retreat down slope to bag.
19. S, then below rare rocky features to yellow.
20. +06:00Due south, then down trail and roughly through chain of yellow to lower trail. Headed S from wide bend N of control, but didn't find bag when I crossed the stream. Decided I had hit narrow reentrant running N from control, but still didn't find bag. Followed stream all the way up to below power lines before reorienting myself and returning to control. In retrospect, I must have been standing 5 m S of control twice before finding it.
21. To trail, then road. Cut through marsh just S of large fallen tree.
22. E to trail, cross stream, then up to control.
23. Contour roughly along top edge of yellow. Caught by Matthias Kohler who stays higher than me in traverse.
24. Contour briefly, then S over spur. A bit hesitant descending as I don't wish to descend too far. Matthias takes longer route contouring around spur, but beats me to the bag looking more confident in his bearings.
25. E through yellow then down spur to trail. Cut corner to indistinct trail leading to control.
26. Parallel stream to next bag. This time I appear a little more confident than Matthias.
F. Briefly distracted by banner for recreational start before picking up funnel to finish.
