Race Evaluation

BAOC China Camp: Blue

mindsweeper

1. Crossed brook early, through the green and into the yellow.
2. Up through the green - not nearly as dense as mapped.
3. +01:00A slight bubble - stood 50m NW of the bag hesitating and looking at my map.
4. On path - overshot a little bit because it was hard to leave the path at the turn. (Vegetation.)
5. Aimed off to the right, then N into the reentrant.
6. On the path until big reentrant. As I was climbing the hill I found a swarming bee's nest, and improvised a little sprint for safety's sake.
7. Up along ridge for a while, then contoured onto the first big spur, across it onto spur with control. Spiked it, which means I should have aimed higher or lower and not count on being so lucky. Several people made big mistakes on this control.
8. Climbed spur, which was a lot greener at the top than mapped. Down road looking for water. Couldn't find it!! Down through yellow, then cross steep reentrant and up to dead tree on the other side.
9. Straight until stream junction.
10. Looked for faint trail - didn't find it until I had gone through a bit of unmapped green. Then down on trail until sharp right turn. Had to climb back up to the control, but I think it was worth it. (No other good attackpoint really.)
11. +00:05Very approximately using the road to steer in. Mistook the first stream for the one close to the control, but didn't hesitate much.
12. +00:10Contoured (much better runnability than mapped) for a while, then up and skirting the rough open into reentrant. Into the yellow on the other side. Hesitated slightly but realized I had to cross the faint trail first. I may have been lucky about my route choice since the field was much less green than mapped.
13. +00:10Went all around to the right of the final hill, should have gone much straighter.
14. Straight, using contours.
15. Catching up on somebody in a purple t-shirt. It can't be... It is! I say hi to Jeff and look for the water along the road. Jeff is nice and holds a cup for me while I pour. (He almost ran past the water but slowed down when he realized what I was up to.) Then I crossed the road, climbed to the faint trail and contoured around on it.
16. +00:05Map is wrong. The stuff mapped as dark green is knee height. Almost ran towards the forest to the N, but luckily I saw the bag.
17. Almost straight, coming down the reentrant slightly to the left.
18. Cut over the hilltop out of the control, then down to path. Cut the marshy corner slightly, stepped in a hole and fell on my face twice. Hope the out-of-bounds marking is not intended to cover the entire marsh, because it wasn't mapped that way. Left the road by the marsh on the left. Through green and up.
19. Contoured, then followed rough open. Saw the rocks through the forest.
20. +00:10Up to the saddle, left on path until yellow blotches - good runnability! Down to path below, then W around spur to next runnable drop. Hesitated before the stream.
21. +00:05Yellow to path, then across on bridge mistakenly. Jumped fence to get back over to the road. Saw people running to the wrong dead tree closer to the road. I veered off earlier, and picked a straighter route just left of the green.
22. Up to trail, on trail until stream, then straight up.
23. Up to faint trail, on faint trail until reentrant. Up slightly and then contoured.
24. +00:15Diagonally up to clearing. Took me a while to be certain that I was going down the correct re-entrant. Through the green.
25. Up across spur and down again on the other side. Along spur at the bottom until I could see a way to get through green. Then out into field with path on right.
26. Around green on left.
F. To the finish, felt like a good race, but felt like I hadn't exhausted myself physically. Dehydrated though, since I only had water once for 70 minutes. Very happy to have such a clean run. Seems like the physical training is also paying off in terms of staying focused.
