NEOC Wolf Den: Green

3. Expected the control to be in the green, so I chose to wiggle up the entrant. Was surprised to pop out the top and see the control hanging in white ... just as it is mapped ... oops.
4. Went left of line to avoid most of the green. At stony knoll followed white gap to east-west cliff, and then down the dark green reentrant at its foot. Tough going there but short. Then across the swamp, and up the hill to the reentrant.
5. +02:00Left of green, crossed what I thought was the intermittant stream, and headed up the hill. Expected to spike the pit, but no pit to be seen. Dithered. Decided I must have come up early, so slowly contoured north. About this time Charlie appeared, which surprised me -- figured he'd be way ahead. Contoured until I could see the large spur forming, judged my distance: 20 m high and 50m too far. So back-tracked and there it was. Silly mistake.
6. Original plan was to follow stone wall and tackle the light green to the clearing. But Charlie was headed the same way. So just to be different, took the trail instead. I thought it should be the slower route, but when I reached clearing, very surprised to see Charlie still about 100m up the road. So darted between outhouses, left of green, and in. No sign of Charlie so hunkered down low and sipped my water quiet as I could.
7. Marsh route.
8. +00:45Ran rough bearing, hit trail, left trail at bend, looking for swamp. Where's my swamp? I should be seeing a swamp. Oh well, there's the flag to my right. Flag's behind a large tree, how unfair. Oh oh, wrong code ... rats. OK, big tree, where could I be? Looking green to the east. Doh! Head NNE ... and there's my control ... but here comes Charlie too. Fooey.
9. Well, how lucky am I feeling? Not much. Decide I'll just run on contours and compass, and use the trail if necessary as a backstop. Charlie zooms by. I can see a boulder ahead, and Charlie is headed for it, but then boom there's the trail. Doh. Check my line and map -- weird I should've seen the correct boulder. Turn 180, look back ... and I can see the flag. Doh!
10. Left or right? Charlie heads rightish. OK then, I'll try left. Angle to trail, at corner head to next trail, pick it up right on schedule, over bridge, over to control. As I see control, Charlie is already punching.
11. +00:20Aim off a bit left. Hit the trail, right where I should have ... but by that time I've forgotten that I aimed off. So I stand confused as a group of hikers puzzle at my appearance.
