Race Evaluation

Possum Trot VIII:

ebuckley

1. Usual stampede to the first control. Platt and Everett were clear by the first control. I was in the next group with Spike, Frei, Carr, Ahmed, and Ackers.
2.
3. Nadim went left and then went on one of his epic booms.
4.
5.
6. Tom & I went through the thick stuff just before the control and lost about 15 seconds to the others who went around. Got it back because most of the others stopped for water and I had my camelbak.
7. By here I had decided that if the whole group went for 8, I'd go to. If either Spike or David went for the skip, I'd skip also.
8. David and I took the 7-10 skip which was an easy trail run. The other three went on to 8.
9.
10.
11.
12. +00:30Got a little loose and hit the small campsite to the left. Took a bit to figure out what was wrong.
13. Took the trail around. Straight might have been faster.
14.
15. +03:00The obligatory bogus Trot control. The clearing was really indistinct and the control was hidden. I attacked from the trail below and then had to bail to the trail to the south to relocate and follow the rocks in. David attacked from above and got out cleanly. My bad for changing my plan mid-route (I had originally planned on David's route, but we were missing low, so I switched to the trail).
16. Everett and Platt (who hadn't skipped yet) caught me. I ran with them for a bit, but couldn't hold their pace on the trails.
17. David (now joined by Aaron, who skipped 14&15) boomed 17, so he was back in sight.
18.
19. Passed Aaron and closed in on David a bit.
20. David missed the trail junction to 20, so I stepped on the gas to get some distance. Aaron hung tough and was about 15 seconds behind me.
21. Took the road around, running hard. Figured that Aaron could probably outsprint me if I didn't get free.
22. Although I had a good attack point from where I crossed the stream, I got worried when there was no dark green. Don't know what the mapper was looking at. Ran in on bearing and hit it cleanly. Aaron was still only 30 seconds behind.
23. Hammered up the hill as hard as I could go figuring it was my last chance to drop Aaron. Guess it worked because he lost contact and boomed. Followed the small clearings into the control.
24. +00:20Got to my attack point (stream junction just below the control) and kinda freaked because things didn't look right. Spent about 20 seconds making sure I was in the right spot since I sure didn't want to give it all away on the last control. The map was fine, I guess I was just tired.
