Race Evaluation

33rd Annual Blue Hills: Traverse

PBricker

1. Followed a group led by Ken Walker.
2. Still following, with minimal map contact.
3. Fall off a group that included JJ near the lead. Fortunately, I knew where we were and read the map to it.
4. Could see JJ's group ahead turn left right after the lake, but stayed on the road to the trail right of line. Doug passed me going down: very rocky.
5. +01:00Came in at the rock feature obscured by right side of the circle. Peter came in to the same spot just after me. I wandered right, Peter read the map and spotted it first.
6. +07:00Peter had too big a head start for me to stay with him. Some others went by me and we all missed right. I let myself get drawn even higher, wandered around, then finally went to the trail and found it along with others. Met Charlie at the flag.
7. +00:30A fateful decision. Rather than follow the pack that went straight, I took the trail, then somehow missed the cross trail and went all the way to the T. When I got to the control, the pack was gone.
8. Went to the knoll, didn't see anything, but someone off to my right drew me to it.
9. +00:45Came out of the control too far north, hit the wrong trail, and ended up taking the trail north of the marsh.
10. Ken Sr. went by me on the road heading to 13, well ahead of me. I caught up to Scott T at the aid station, and left before him.
11. Includes 1:07 for water. Saw George coming out.
12.
13. Road.
14. Up and over. Don't think it added much time, if any.
15. Easy.
16. Trial to road to trail above the road. Slow, but nailed it.
17. Some hesitation at the end. I was 10 meters away, but tried reading the map instead of looking.
18. +01:00Caught in the brambles going to the road. Then backed out and went all the way around the north side. Should have gone straight.
19. +01:30This time going up and over was a BIG mistake. But I nailed it from the trail junction, and lost two guys that I had been trying to shake for most of this map.
20. Trail, around the green, and up the reentrant
21. Cliff made for a perfect attack point.
22. +05:30Braindead. Wanted to hit the the little trail left of line, but hit the trail right of line and headed down to the main trail and got totally confused. Panicked instead of using my head. Eventually climbed up to the road and in by the tower. Lost three places.
23. Hesitated at the ciff S. of it.
