Race Evaluation

33rd Annual Blue Hills: Traverse

Joe

1. go straight, go fast, rough compass, punch second to Ross
2. weird exit, but looks like veg was better, pack is catching up on hill approach
3. +00:15took the new trail up to the "road" and watched everyone go right on trail. kept going straight and dropped down through woods almost on the straight line. caught the lead and followed them over the trail. should have climbed on the trail and then attacked closer to control
4. +00:03not going to chase the lead this early. running easy w/ 2nd tier, one hesitation as ross and someone else go left at bottom of hill
5. +00:02read myself up passed cliff to trail. exit trail and followed spur to flag. now running with Ernst only. Andy and Swede no where.
6. +00:20slow, but careful. no big 7 min mistakes this week, at least not yet!
7. +00:30should have taken safer route west to trail, instead went straight at it. zig zagged around and attacked from cliff s/e. ended up just south from flag and did not see it. it seemed further away from the rock than I interpreted. here comes group including JJ and Alar.
8. +00:05looked easy so I hit the jets to put distance on follow group. Attacked from knoll to s/w and stopped just before what I thought was the north side. few steps more. Ernst still there.
9. +00:03route to right on trails. cut off small drop at the left turn to s/w. easy attack from trail intersection to s/e. trip on way in, almost pierced the jugular.
10. +00:04ran down road and stopped at intersection too early. Ernst corrected me and we continued.
11. +00:45dumb approach after saying hello to jeff. ducked into woods way too early and ended up n/e of boulder 100 m to n/e.
12. straight on, no problem
13. +00:25ran easy back to jeff watching next group going in to 11. straight up road, stop to tie shoelace, continue into woods using Ernst as guide. read map, looked up and see Ross leaving flag.
14. +01:45big decision. decide to go right. hit trail junction 10 m east. read map and decide to leave trail early and contour instead of from intersection and climb one contour. well, I ended up climbing and not dropping and found other rocks and maybe even the other mapped one. So I attempted to find correct one and found Ross. Was he leaving or looking? Guessed he was leaving and went in right direction. Pack of Alar, JJ and others following. No sign of Ernst who went other way, I think.
15. Enter and exit as a dogleg. Alar, JJ and one other.
16. took route to road. looked fastest. up hill with no problem.
17. +01:00knowing Alar was behind me I decided to push the pace in and out of 16. I accelerated down hill and saw what I thought was a patch of green to s/e of flag. turns out what I thought was med. green was actually slash green. so the pine trees I headed for were not mapped at all and I wound up on the trail to north and east at the bottom of the hill. realized this and turned s/w thru the rocks, tripped and face planted on a stick that caught me in the mouth. felt the blood, felt the hole. not too bad, not through to the inside. was pissed more from screwing up the control than the injury. saw Alar and was happy he had trouble too.
18. attempted to get to road, but was forced to parallel it for awhile. finally get there and make up some time.
19. take right route. cut off the corner of trail near the yellow clearing. down reentrant, around hill and straight up into the boulder
20. notice the line error. take it slow to avoid losing places until I reach trail at top of reentrant. I see Ernst again just about to punch. I try to push pace across rock scree and fall again, this time slashing my palm. Making time up though.
21. +01:00following Ernst out to trail and for some dumb reason I turn directly towards flag. I guess I thought if I was going to get passed Ernst I would have to take a chance at passing him in the woods. Little did I know he was tiring. The woods route is super slow. I lose myself and run towards a flag, but it is from the yellow course. regroup and find flag.
22. running as hard as possible with good idea where flag is. once across trail I can see yellow knoll and run hard. As I get within 20 meters I see Ernst coming over knoll. I know I have to punch first and do.
23. Leave flag as fast as possible. did not look back. slowed towards flag, but luckily it was visible for a distance.
F. no brainer to trail and finish.
