CNYO/EMPO Halloween Howl Day 2: Red

dlevine

1. Up the hill and in trying to concentrate on the 1:15000 scale after several runs at 1:10000.
2. Trail up hill and along ridge top. VIsibility was good enough to consider remembering this strategy. Can easily look down and see controls if they are near the top.
3. Ran low by edge of swamp to check out water levels. Attacked off woodsy hill and went up and in.
4. Footing was bad and I lost my pace. Mistook cliff northwest of control for one northeast. Saw Rick Worner coming in and realized my mistake.
5. Went straight, but should have hugged the swamp more to avoid the ravine with the cliff.
6. Straight in. Acquired two cadets.
7. Bounced off road into field, but botched the attack.
8. Got to building in time to see cadets go down the reentrant to the east. Saw a bunch of folks leaving the control.
9. Through field and up hill and then all the way around on the trail to the west of the swamp. After my "scouting" on the way to #3, I didn;t want to go straight. (I still think this is a winning move.)
10. Across road, up and in.
11. BRAIN CRAMP. Was too high and crossed the deep stream to the southwest. AfterI realized that one is supposed to stop at the catching feature, I was able to slowly recover. Punched just ahead of Brad Whitmore and Rick Worner.
12. BRAIN CRAMP CONTINUES. Followed Brad to road, but chose to go straight in while he went west. After a bit, Charlie Leonard, Rick and I were looking, but Brad was gone. Like a fool, I went east (if Brad was west and no longer around, then....) and was left behind by everyone. Eventually stumbled across it while starting a major recovery effort.
13. Straight to it while nearly killing myself on the rocks above the trail.
14. Took trail north and then west up(!) through cliffs. Got on wrong spur (I knew it, but couldn't see a cliff on the other) and blew time in the vicinity.
15. Fine. Gee, I'm okay at distnaces of less than 150 meters...
16. No problems. Did look down and think that it was nice to see a search and rescue team out for some practice. Of course, now I know what it really was...
17. Took a really bade line (straight) and paid a time penalty.
18. Trail to first opening and then up and follow the stone wall.
19. Straight, staying above the swamp.
20. Down, wondering if it's even worth running at this point.
21. Straight.
F. In, as some girl says, "Congratulations, you've got last place; you're the last finisher."
