Race Evaluation

CNYO/EMPO Halloween Howl Day 2: Red

jima

1. Started with Bob Lux (he was running green). Went up the trail together-he had an interesting running style up the hill - huff and puff as he ran 10-15 paces, then speed walk 10-15 paces, huff and puff, then walk. Seemed to be fairly effective, I only made a bit of time up on him. Stayed on the trail to the bend past the junction, then straight in, counting knolls. Thought I saw a cadet coming in from the left as I was leaving.
2. To the trail, wandered a bit left of the line and hit the tip of the marsh, but didn't lose too much time. Up the trail by the water tower, then in off the trail junction. Puched just behind Jim Perkins (cadet) who started 1 min in front of me.
3. decided to minimize the climb, stayed right to the trail/stream junction, then take the trails. Went up the hill at the beginning of the marsh, then off the trail by the building, past #9. Footing really bad, but I manage to keep moving. Finally figure the contour is a discernable elevation change and run along the top to the control. Punch just before Jim P.
4. On the line to the reentrant, Jim P heads right, I drop below the line of cliffs, through the next reentrant, then the terrace. Pucnh behind another cadet.
5. Down and skirt the marsh. Don't cut back left quite soon enough and have to cut back to avoid the 4' deep stream cut. Along the trail, over the small knoll, a couple of folks in front of me head too far left, Ross and another blue runner on my right, headed down the spur, and was first one in. The beep as I punch sounded loud and pulled the nearby runners in.
6. Down the hill with a crowd on my tail, Ross says thanks for the assist as he passes by. Drift a lettle left, but correct quickly and in.
7. Contour around, drop a bit over the stream and back up. Jim P and another cadet running nearby. Follow the top of the hillside along to the control. Pegged it.
8. Pretty close to the line for the first half of the leg, head left to minimize the drop and climb over the 2 small streams. Jim P in front of me as we come up from the 2d stream, I get hung up a bit in the thicker stuff, area looks vaguer than I expect. Jim P and other cadet punch in front of me and take off.
9. Out past the building and through the parking lot, trying to figure out which way I want to go. Never really see the choice to the right of the marsh, decide against trying to cut through at the center over the knoll/island. Cross the road and head to the SE corner of the parking lot and angle up the hill. Both cadets are ahead of me and off to the right somewhere. As I reach the top and stumble onto the trail, the cadet that I'd been behind comes along the trail from the right. I follow him down the trail - he keeps going on the trail after turning left over the footbridge. I cut through the march at this point. Get my feet a little wet, but not too bad. As I hit the trail, the cadet comes dashing by and gives me the "oh, you again" look. Hehe. I cut up the hill at an angle fairly quickly, cadet continues down the trail. As I crest the hill, I recognize where I am from coming through earlier, the circle knoll about 125 m E of the flag and pick my way through the junk. As I punch, Jim P comes in from the N and I see the other cadet coming in close behind. A little cunning makes up for the lack of speed, but it would be nice to have both back again...

Through the junk to the trail then across the road. Jim P made it in front of me and he's started into the clearing directly across from the small trail. I start in the same way, then see he's caught up in all the brambles. I reverse back to the road and cut in a few meters down where previous runners had gotten through. Past the rocky pit, over the small stream bed, up the spur. Jim P. is to my left and glancing over at me know and then. I'm sort of looking for the marshy ground and the spur with a control on it. If I saw the marshy ground, it doesn't sink in. Kepp on cnargin up the hill at an angle, then realize that it's flattening out and there's not really much reentrant/spur stuff happening around me. See some wet ground ahead of me, but when I get to it, it dawns on me that the stream is too big and I've overrun by about 200m. Jim P. is trailing and off to my left a bit, so I quietly swing back. I see a yellow park boundary sign, but I can't really tell if it's at the corner, or running east-west or north-south. Semi relocate off the light green, then see somone crossing below me that looks like they've just punched. I head down and finally get it.
11. Bad distance judgement

Irritated and looking at my watch. Plan to follow my compass and tick off 3 intermittent stream crossings as I gradually drop down. Instead I stay high and cross the 2 larger gullies above the control. Finally stop when I see the gullies coming together past the 2 big ones. Hadn't been pace counting, etc. Finally relocate and attack from the stream intersection 75 m SSW of the control.
12. The semi-open looks questionable, so I head rioght off the line and force through the brambles to the firing range. Out to the road and across into the junk footing. Tick off the 2 boulders and the crevice area, past a control at the N end of the stony ground and in.
13. Rough compass through more junk, hit the trail just NE of the clearing. See the stone wall , then almost run past the rock face, until I realize I need to be looking closer to the marsh.
14. Start out to the NE to take the trails around, then decide it's too far off the line. Head back past the control and across the marsh, almost reconsider when I see the stream and no good crossing point. I can see that others have crossed. In up to my knees and it's cold. Up over the rock faces to the trail, legs tightening up from the cold, shoes full of water and o-pants quite a bit heavier. Trail to the clearing, then in. Looks like more of a reentrant than I was expecting, stay on bearing and it falls into place. Punch about same time as Jeff Saeger.
15. Just under the rock faces and up to the flag ahead of Jeff.
16. Decide to stay high to the left of the line, Jeff goes low. Cross stream by tip of marsh, over the spur/terrace, see the stream & gully, then get on a deer paththat runs along the top. I see Jeff below ahead of me, but he'll have to climb to the control.
17. Flirt with idea of follwoing the line, but decide to hit the road instead. Down the hill after a cadet, I don't go quite far enough to the right and get slowed down in the green. Hit the road ahead of the cadet, who passes me. Get to the control just before Jeff.
18. Tired
Cross the road, behind Jeff, and someone else. Onto the trail. I'm expecting it to be downhill to 18 (because of the marsh??)and seeing the uphill takes the wind out of my sails. Trudge up the hill, with Jeff pulling well ahead. Hand rail off the stone wall and in.
19. Tired
Rough compass and stay on the spur - takes longer than I expect.
20. Tired
Stumble down the hill, don't really see the trail, over the stream, through the green, a couple of folks coming up behind me.
21. Tired
Not much left
F. Tired
Not much of a sprint to the finish
