Race Evaluation

Bubba Goat 2000: Long Bubba

jjcote

1. Bad route choice
+00:30
Went around on trail, while Ron Eaglin and Dave Ousley went straight through the (dry) marsh, which was quicker.
2. Bad map reading
Unused to map
+02:00
With Matt Stuckey down to the firebreak, back up around the dark green to the trail on the west side, south through the green, and picked up the trail heading to the control. Matt cut off too early, I cut off later, but still a bit too early, and made a circle through the palmetto. Came back out to the trail in time to see Jonathan Campbell heading in at the correct spot, at the back of a small pack.
3. Hesitated
+00:30
SSW to the full open area, then Jonathan and I went SE to Robin Meadow, and headed across it to the place where the trail enters the woods. Cut off at the first bend, got across the fence, and left the second trail at the correct spot to circle around teh palmetto patch. Didn't see the clearing at first, so Jonathan beat me to it, and the last I saw of him was as he headed off for #4. Several others caught up as I was leaving.
4. Just south of the straight line. Saw Ron up ahead as I approached the control.
5. Bad compass work
+00:10
Turned the wrong way when I approached the river, but corrected quickly, and headed down the white corridors that I had seen on the previous day's course, even cutting through a narrow stretch of palmetto at one point for a shortcut. Slow and careful coming into the control.
6. Around by the river, caught up to Ron just before the control, and we were together for pretty much the rest of the race (it seems we had the same fork on this forked control).
7. Confused parallel features
+00:20
North of the pond, up the marshy reentrant, and through a little green. I told Ron that he had beter be able to find this one, since the course he had set the day before used the same feature! Still oopsed it a tiny bit.
8. Bad map reading
+01:00
Through the woods, and cut through some thick palmetto. I made an inexplicable (to Ron) turn, thinking I was heading for #14, but turned back pretty quick.
9. Around the river bend instead of wading.
10.
11. Confused parallel features
+00:20
Cut off straight from the bridge, and turned the wrong way on the intermittent stream channel -- Ron caught that one.
12. Unused to terrain
+01:30
Through the marsh (didn't realize it was marsh!) and hit the earth bank on the far side. We had to hunt around a while to find the intermittent stream.
13. Saw a couple of deer running through the marsh.
14. Confused parallel features
Unused to terrain
+02:00
Got a bit too far left and saw the open marsh ahead of us, and had to hook back. Took us a bit to find the righttip of the correct marsh when we got there.
15. Ron said, "I know a good way through, I know where there's a hole!" and led the way for teh first half. Snaked right through to the earth bank no problem, but Ron thought he heard someone coming from behind.
16. Sunny, hot... both of us starting to fade. Ron went right of the forest tip at the end, I went left and got ahead.
17. Bad compass work
East to the rough open, north through the swamp, across the open area (between the white blobs), fought through some palmetto, then found the big rootstocks pretty easily.
18. Did not like map
+04:00
Went left of the line, and the marsh was pretty cruddy, full of head-high plants. Couldn't find the indistinct trail, but got out to the main trail. Knew where we were crossing, but got waylaid by some small unmaped clearings before the one we wanted, and drifted left to hit the trail to the north. Looped back, and still had to look around a little before we got to the right spot.
19. Up the trail, and Ron started to turn right at the T, but chnaged his mind when he saw me head into the woods. Got turned by vegetation a bit and hit the small trail a little further east than we would have liked. After crossing the big trail, I took the first left, but Ron went straight. He had a lead at that point, and maintained it so that he was leaving the control as I arrived.
F. Across the marsh (I was smarter by now), and Ron was in sight, but too far out for me to catch him.
