USMA West Point A-Meet 2010: Green Y Long Distance

Charlie

1. On the road to the bend and then across through rocks and barberry.
2. +06:00 At #1, went to punch and the box fell off the stand. Then picked it up to put it on and the post came out of the ground. Then the cord on the box got stuck at the bottom of the post, so I couldn't get it on the top. Finally got it together and my shoe was untied. Yikes! Then thought I would run the road SW toward #2 and fought my way through barberry down there, only to see the locked gate and then look closely at the map to see the red X. No point in following the fence line, so turned back and started climbing. Reading the terrain pretty well, following cliffs, sometimes above, sometimes below. Past the Green X control where I saw Adam Bricker, across the long knoll just before the control to a cliff I was sure was it, but no bag. A little further and saw what I later learned was the right cliff facing away from me, but another cliff (apparently unmapped) facing away. Back to the knoll, walking in, still seemed like the first cliff was right, but kept on and found it. Apparently the opposite cliff was mapped as invisible bare rock. Rick Worner coming up from below, had run by it a few times.
3. Easy.
4. Past the very wet marsh, came in from below. As I was leaving Rick was coming in from above.
5. Badly hung up in the mountain laurel for a while, and almost despairing of ever getting out. Once I did saw Rick up ahead
