Race Evaluation

QOC: Greenbelt: Red

Nadim

1. Felt pretty good. Cut across the parking lot and not far in, I sighted the reentrant below. I could not see the control until I got close.
2. Out across the creek and to the road quick. I thought it best to use the road and trails even though it was further. I was a little hesitant when attacking after leaving the trail intersection and once again didn't see the control until I was right on it.
3. I ran straightish to the reentrant/ditch complex. Rather than focus on the detail I went to the left side. I heard someone coming up fast behind me. It turned out to be Dan Quinn and his dog. They were going around the green while I went across thinking it would be a bit higher. I realized I was high and so did Dan. I soon saw it in the next ditch down. Dan got there about a second before me. I had to reach through branches to get to the control.
4. Dan was out quick. After looking at the map, I gave chase but soon realized that Dan was drifting to the right. I looked for and saw the reentrant that would lead me to the control on my left. Not long after moving into it, I came upon an elephant path in the snow that took me to the control. It was further down than expected but I think the map contours could be improved here.
5. Out the way I came, I just kept a good bearing. At the end, I was a tiny bit left and slowed. I heard activity nearby but reading the map, I realized I was probably off so I cut right and found it after getting through some green.
6. I ran out fairly straight and once again used the reentrant rather than the ditch structure to get me close enough to see the control.
7. I decided that using the trail was safer than risking getting caught-up in thorns or having a bad attack point. After getting across the bridge, I ran through the valley but wasn't very careful counting ditches/reentrants on my right. I decided I'd gone far enough and angled up. I hit a reentrant that I figured was past the control but didn't see the pit. A young woman orienteer asked me if I knew where the control was and I honestly said I didn't. A few seconds later however, I realized I was low. I climbed a short way and found it.
8. I angled up to the road, trying to avoid the green parts. It seemed like a long way and perhaps I did too much zig-zagging. I didn't trust the vegetation mapping and just went on what I saw. I came out a bit left of where I wanted, then cut right down the road and to the gate at the trail intersection. I ran along the trail a little to get around some green than attacked. I never liked the contours in this area and having really only looked at the map instead of the control description I was thinking it was in a reentrant at first. However I found the spur and the control w/o trouble.
9. I cut straightish across reentrants and the creek to the trail. Cutting left, ran up the trail to the sharp bend then tried to keep running fast. Slower would have been better--I might have seen the reentrant that the gully was in, on my right. Instead I was slightly too low and then climbed too high near the houses. Seeing the houses convinced me to turn around and I found it.
10. I started running straightish but weaved to avoid green. I cut over the ridge to cross the green too soon. Coming upon a very nice unmapped ditch had me thinking briefly but I passed it. I moved back up too high after that but was low enough to see the control and Greg Lennon leaving the area.
11. I cut over the ridge and stayed a bit left to avoid the mapped green as much as possible. I popped out on the trail with a view of the valley across. Greg and others were in the reentrant. I had to cut right but then made-up some ground.
12. I knew from a previous run that the green on the direct line getting to the trail wasn't bad anymore but I wasn't sure about what was after the trail. I decided to risk it and unfortunately got caught-up in it. I cut right and uphill to find a way through. When I did, I ignored my compass, saw Greg Lennon crossing in front of me and went down. I wasn't sure if he'd been to the control or not. I kept moving down and then hit the trail unsure of where I was on it. I cut right and recognized things. I was again trailing Greg and someone else in the green and fortunately we all got to the control w/o too much more trouble.
13. I would have liked to go straighter to the trail but didn't like the green that I saw blocking the way. I dropped low quick and hit the trail running at a good pace. Greg Lennon popped out just behind me so going straighter was probably better. I kept moving feeling fairly strong. I didn't want to waste energy on climbing through more green so I stayed low w/o crossing the creek all the way to the road. I crossed the creek at the road, then stayed in the valley following the side stream to the control.
14. I was hesitant about this control. I knew an elephant path through the snow was going a bit too far right. Others were soon to be seen both low and high. Having again not read the control description, I started checking ditches instead of spurs. I did drop into one to make sure I didn't miss anything in the green but realized I was too low. Coming up, I fumbled over to it. Tom Nolan was leading me and others to it.
15. I looked to go straighter but with the clearer way being to follow others, I did that and passed two people. I hit the trail near the bend, then just went straight, still behind Tom Nolan. At the next trails I cut right and left to the road. Cutting in at the yellow, I got right behind Tom until there was room to pass. I thought it safest to head to the parking lot even with the green ditches in the way after it. After crossing the first (it was easy), I saw the control far ahead.
F. I ran pretty straight to the field and in. I didn't feel very fast.
