Race Evaluation

WCOC Pond Mountain: Red Course

Charlie

1. Including 7:10 copying the map, trail to the hill, then along the top.
2. Straight, could see the cliff, but not the flag from a distance
3. kept an eye on the stone wall, then saw the large rock up past the end. Hard to climb up.
4. tricky getting back down the hill. Along the marsh.
5. Across marsh to the trail, checking contours and then seeing the rock from the trail
6. SSW on trail and around, then keeping an eye on stone walls below me an left, crossing stone wall and stream, then right of rocky knolls and spiked it.
7. W down rocky slope and along marsh till end, then up broad spur and contour around. Left knoll on spur to my right and got above reentrant. Saw cliff but not flag and got a little nervous, but it was just hiding behind a tree.
8. Generally south checking off various cliffs and contours until I realized I was right next to the trail. Jumped on trail to small knoll N of #10 and then in on compass. Saw # 10 and saw the knoll, two rocks on top led me right in.
9. Stop to get the right bearing then started running. Could see it from a distance.
10. On compass, and remembering what it looked like.
11. +04:00Planned trail around, but thought all the contours to the E represented a big knoll. Once I started down I realized I was looking at it the wrong way and I had already passed the trail. Back up to trail and navigated cleanly to #14. Wondered why the control was in a reentrant and not on a knoll, then checked the code. Yikes! Fortunately not too far from there, but a little extra work.
12. caught the corner of the trail, and saw the marsh below. Got a little loose and I was feeling very tired. Figured it out, though and the spur with the cliff on it was pretty distinctive.
13. +04:00Sloppy. Drifted a bit too low and got into a parallel error. Saw a boulder and then a fine charcoal platform, but no pit beyond it. Instead a big rock. So stopped to figure it out for a while and realized I was 100 m to low on the hill. What a drag climbing back up.
14. Left around green and marsh. Easy leg, given that I had been there once already.
15. Fairly straight, right of rocky spur, then across top of broad shallow reentrant to where AT crosses knoll and easy from there.
16. Nice running downhill on compass. Hitting just left of pond along the straight line. Then walked all the way uphill. I could see the cliff and the flag as soon as I got over the spur. Just had to keep slogging up the hill.
17. Slog some more. Pretty straight, checking off features.
18. Pretty good leg, considering how much I had to walk. Left of marsh then picked up trail. Jumped off trail to the left after bare rock spur on the right when the trail started to go downhill. A little scratchy through the green, but kept at it past intermittent trail crossing spur, then angled uphill and spiked it.
19. Drifted just slightly right but hit the stream and had gone far enough, so looked left and got it.
20. Fairly straight. Stayed right of rocky spur on the way up, then checked off a few knolls until hitting the small trail, down reentrant just R of bend and straight in.
21. Crossed road and spur just S of #2, along stonewall looking for path. Picked it up near the top, then got on lower path around fuller pond to the left.
22. Light green leaving trail was really nasty stuff, but got whiter up near stone wall. Aimed for junction then hopped across to bag
F. Easy. found the gap in the green on compass and the rest was fine.
