Race Evaluation

US Sprint & UltraLong champs: UltraLong: Green X

Charlie

1. Through the clearing and then E to the trail and to the bend. Would have been better to stay on trail to the stream and avoid a couple of lines. Ran below clearings and green to point of second clearing then looked right, as I was a line too high.
2. Thought about going left and finding trail out to large trail, but didn't want to try the green on the other side, so stayed low under the green and contoured. Kind of slow. Then a little tentative crossing the broad hillside, but hitting the stream right at the flag.
3. Up the spur, but drifted a bit right of line and got caught in nasty pines up near the road. Then along E side of two large ponds to trail S to rough clearings and over knoll to marsh.
4. Bore off a bit right and hit trail at water stop. In on trail to pond and on compass.
5. +02:00Over hill and along left side of marsh to trail, then S on trail to clearing and downhill to stream. Stayed close to stream for the long trudge to the stream jct. Not great running down there. Saw Walter heading apparently from 6 to 7 and crossing my path. Then drifted a bit high and got into reentrants 100 m north of control and had to relocate and down.
6. Straight, reading the contours well.
7. Long trudge up spur to knoll on top, then across to small knoll and out to the trail even with pond. Left side of pond. Charlie S passed here. Along the reentrant checking off marshes, including an extra one.
8. Generally SE to the trail. Charlie had apparently gone more E and went motoring by on the trail as I popped out and was out of sight almost immediately, as I stopped to tie a shoe. Past clearing with water stop where I caught up with Dennis. ESE to small clearings and took trail downhill for about 150-200 M, then S through reentrant and to control. Nice running downhill on trail.
9. Contoured, didn't see aid at corner - maybe I was too high. Down to stream and then up and over.
10. Long slog. Passed by a few blue runners, including Wyatt. Aimed for form line knoll on top, and apparently I was there, although it was pretty indistinct. Could see the reentrant developing.
11. Back up to trail, but on an angle. Probably would have been better to head straighter up. Around on trail to trail just N of control. Charlie S passed me here again.
12. Leaving ponds, Charlie missed the trail and headed back through green woods. I took trail and got ahead, being careful to run around green patches on other side and into yellow. Charlie caught up again, but I picked up the pace to hold him off.
F. Charlie breathing down my neck!
