Race Evaluation

NEOC: Blue Hills Traverse: Traverse

Charlie

1. Trudging up the hill behind all the leaders, I came on Peter stopped, looking at his map. Then he turned right and into the depression, punching first, I was 2nd. Lucky!
2. Couldn't read the map and move, so I followed Peter. Not sure where we were, but when we got off trail I stopped to try to read and promptly fell on my face! Lost Peter and into the control, not realizing he had overshot it. Lucky again!
3. Up the trail and around the hill to the east. Saw Ken W and Terry K ahead, among others.
4. NW to trail, up the trail a bit to cross at saddle S of sandpit, and down reentrant and across, Ken in sight all the way.
5. On the major trail route, got below it in a crowd, with Ken ahead and Phil. Then Peter and J-J showed up - dumb move, I followed Phil instead.
6. Up the hill, fought through some green, but found the little trail. Popped up on top right behind J-J. Followed him down hill to 6 without a lot of sense of where I was.
7. Followed Peter and J-J out to road and down. They were pulling away, and I didn't see them jump off at the wiggle. Went a bit further then jumped offand caught the faint trial after a while, behind Gari. He followed the trail when it bent N, and I went E through the woods. Caught up to him again, staying on trails. Clint showed up. Crossed the stone wall WSW of the control picked up Clint coming from my left and straight in.
8. Pretty straight, past the boulder and down the reentrant. Passed Clint who was walking, and caught a stick in the eye just before the control. Couldn't see for a while - and it's still blurry.
9. On compass, couldn't see the map well, or where I was going that well either. Came down by the big cliffW of control, back and forth with Clint.
10. Felt really slow and tired on trail, Clint off ahead. He went straight up nose, I went right. He was ahead.
11. Passed Clint at the trail, got a little confused and stopped for a bit just before control.
12. Really hard to get myself up this hill. Clint was off to the left, and came rushing by me like a train when he realized I was on it.
13. Started running the trail around to the left before I figured out where I was, then cut back and up the hill through the woods. Finally popped out on the narrow trail through the green just behind Gari. Clint was just behind me. We split up, Clint going left, Gari up the trail, and me fairly straight, and all ended up at the control together.
14. Straight over the top - nasty scrub oak there, then took the trail right and down the cliffs. Followed the trails through to the end of the dark green, then down the spur. Gari and Clint were there around the same time.
15. Bad route - S to trail junction, then down trail to SE to reentrant and down through rocks - really slow going.
16. +04:00Up the road to the bend, over the top and down the spur. Saw Clint walking up hill. Saw a big cliff below me and ran to it, but it was the one just W of the control. Looked around and saw lots of big cliffs. Finally went looking for the stone wall and followed it back.
17. ESE across the road and onto the trail near the big boulder. Took the upper fork to the bend, across the double reentrant and down the side of the big spur. I could see the knoll in front of the control from pretty far away. Thought I heard someone calling my name.
18. Cramping and really tired. SE to the narrow trail just below all the rocks. E on the trail across the stream, then straight in from the T.
19. +04:00Saw Ken behind me as I was leaving. Went E on the big trail to just before the junction, then cut the corner and went N up the spur. Crossed the funny reentrant just W of the control, but didn't find the rock in the green. Unfortunately turned up instead of down and got all the way up to the trail before I figured it out.
20. Straight under the line the whole way. Half way there I saw Ken and somebody else down to my left looking perplexed, obviously wondering where 19 was.
21. Contoured, kinda slow, saw it from above.
22. +01:00Intimidated (wrongly) by the gfeen, I headed N out to the trail by the road and around from there. Really slow when I had to climb back up. A little confused by all the big rocks in there, but OK.
23. Stumbling and cramping. WSW through marsh to trail, around marsh to the W, down trail to bend, then down the reentrant. Saw the knoll above the control from a ways off.
24. How many times have I screwed up a 100m leg. Walked every step and nailed it. How much could I have lost by not running? Not much.
25. Down the reentrant, right on the small trail to the road, down the trail and in.
26. Stopped short before the first hill for a bit because I had seen a phantom trail junction, but figured it out and kept going.
F. If I had known how big a lead I had over the next guy at this point I would have walked in! Really tired, but a good run. Thanks, Michael!
