Race Evaluation

QOC Hemlock Overlook: Blue

Nadim

1. Down the trail to the left and along the shore - this was easy. I guess it was a warm-up but I felt like I lost a lot of altitude without much to show for it.
2. +01:30I'd miss-read the control to be in a reentrant. When I didn't see it in the larger one that I thought it was to be in, I went on. I got to where I could see the ridge ending so I turned back and eventually go to it.
3. Up the hill, then to the trail. I came off the trail well and spiked the control, coming at it blind from the side.
4. I dog-legged back the way I'd come, then descended to the river. I started to go in early, then thought better of it. I still climbed early but was below the control when I turned the ridge.
5. I dropped down to the river, then started to go under the man-made structure at the bottom of the trail I'd taken on the way to #1 (old bridge remnant?). The way was blocked so I backed-up around it, and ran along the river--it was slow. Eventually, I popped up at the river bend. Once up, I descended most of the way to the control. The spur was much more broad than expected from the contours.
6. +00:20I thought about this for a while but ultimately went low for the trails. I actually got to the control location, didn't see the control and since it was such an old roostock, I didn't think it could be hiding the control on the other side. I went on a little bit before turning around and seeing it.
7. Just nice straight running and counting the knolls.
8. +00:15I had a route that was generally to the left. I started going up the trail and broke-off at the saddle SE of #12. I ran through the reentrants, or walked when needing to on the climbs. At the end, I went around the green on the south (right) side. I saw a second rootstock in the green but looked back and saw the correct one. A few other competitors were there and I got the feeling that they were on the Orange course.
9. I dog-legged back the way I'd come, and got on the big ridge trail. I just wasn't running that fast. Coming off a bend, I spiked the control.
10. I came out of the reentrant where #9 was, then realized I was a bit too far left. I corrected, saw the control, and finished-up.
11. I ran staying high as I cold at first. Once across the big reentrant, I climbed more steeply. From the ridge, I could see the deadfall.
12. Leaving #11, some teenage girls asked if I had been searching for #120. I checked and said "no", not really pausing long--I felt a little guilty for that and David Onkst indicated stopping for some girls fitting the description, helping them, and losing enough time that he didn't have time to finish the course. I read my way the rest of the way across, hitting the saddle that I'd been to on the way to #8. At the end, I started going to the high side of then green.
13. I came out of the reentrant at #12, used the trail, and left it to go about as straight as I could--it worked.
14. +05:00I left in too much a hurry. Somehow I missed the trail option, low and to the right. Instead, I tried to stay high too much. I found plenty of controls but non were mine. If I'd kept reentrant hopping just one more time, I would have found it. Instead I bailed heading toward a ridge trail. After re-locating, when I could see the saddle that I'd been to the long leg to #8 and #12, I reversed direction and went straight to the control.
15. +00:15I ran fairly straight at it. At the end, I'd drifted left a little. When I'd hit the right elevation, I saw it to my right a ways away.
F. Climbing up the reentrants without crossing the main one at first, I did use the trail eventually and approached the finish through the green south of the control.
