NEOC Heart and Troll Revival A-Meet: Green X Day 2

jima

1. Decided I wasn't going to get excited, blaze off uphill, deprive my brain of oxygen and do something stupid - a reasonable approach that worked. Walking fast up the hill, angle towards the stream/reentrant, to the top, over the knoll, saw the dot knoll, looked left and saw the top of the flag.
2. Rough compass to the trail, to the end of the light green, saw the rock face and carefully approached, ticking off the small reentrant, rock face, and saw the boulder through the light green stuff.
3. Getting encouraged, as I was "seeing" the map and terrain quite well. Rough compass uphill past eh rock faec to the trail. Saw the shape of the spur, over it and angled left. Checked to see how far down I should drop. Went a little low as there was a deer path to follow, then looked up a bit and saw the (rocky) dot knoll.
4. Rough compass, but wandered left and right a bit on the way to the trail. Came out to the trail to the right of the line, saw the dot knoll ahead, checked off the long rock face just beyond it and pegged it. A bit to slow moving through the woods and not concentrating enough on keeping a straight line.
5. Around the end of the large cliff, Trail, dot knoll small spur with control on rock feature on other side. Saw Ron Bortz who had started behind me, moving fast. Got a bit spooked when I saw a lot of rock on the knoll ahead of me, figured (hoped) it was the form line knoll, looked right and saw the boulder.
6. Racing Ron. Was right on the line for the first hundred meters or so - bad footing with rocks, downed hemlock limbs, but culdn't see a good way to move right just a bit, so kept going. Stayed on contour tot he rocky reentrant, should have dropped down a line or two. Through the first saddle, looked like there was a shelf just above me and climbed p to it rather than running on the sidehill. Back and forth with Ron. Saw a cadet on the uphill side, then Tracy O coming up from the left in the shallow reentrant. Right into it. Lost track of Ron, heard later he overshot.
7. Racing Tracy downhill, she found a better line to run. About to get nervous when the reentrant appeared. At the flag Tracy mentioned she'd been there the day before due to a 180 from up on the ridge line.
8. Over to the trail, ran it hard to the rocky area, and in. Helped by someone not to far ahead of me.
9. Decied to head right of the line, just below the open and dark green areas, hit the jeep trail and go in from the spur, but think I ended staying much closer to the line. Hit the flat at the bottom, looked wider than I expected, realized where I was and headed up the hill. Saw Tom Strat just ahead of me, had started 2 minutes before me. Chugging slowly up the hill, things not matching up quite right, but popped over the spur, adn saw Tom at the control just off to my right.
10. Around to the right just a bit, with Tom taking a straighter line. Working hard to keep him in sight. Cadet came into view on my right. Saw teh lower form line reentrant, then the larger spur and reentrant and punched third behind Tom and the cadet.
11. Left of the line to the spur / ridgeline. Saw the line boulder to my left about 200m short, hill top with dot knoll, into the rocky reentrant, hill top to my right front was larger and rockier than I expected, but everything else matched. To the saddle, saw Kathy McArdle heading across my left front like she'd just left a control, over the knoll and in.
12. Saw Tom, Jon Campbell, and someone else as I came back over the knoll. Was considering going left fo the line and droppping down from above, but a quick glance down to my right - saw it was open and looked like a nice shelf to run along. Caught up to Kathy, saw some hemlocks ahead but no boulder or flag. Jon Campbell came by and stayed to my left. About to get nervous, but saw the rhododendrons, angled right a bit and saw the boulder. Punched just ahead of Jon.
13. Angled down through the junk. Jon dropped straight down, and was ahead of me on the trail. Poor footing with leaves and a lot of roots sticking up. Lost sight of Jon after the bridge, right at the first trail junction, popped over to the larger trail when the trail climbed. Tom got ahead of me, and a couple of brown runners came in from the side. Not a lot left.
