Race Evaluation

North American Championships: Green Y Middle Distance

Charlie

1. Around pond and up ridge line, cutting the corner for the saddle
2. Hard fall on first downhill, but unscathed. On ridgetops and coming down on compass right on top of it.
3. On compass, and staying a bit left of flat area at top near control to come right into it.
4. Plan was generally NNE across trail then on ridgetops. Drifted a bit east, coming out opposite edge of marsh and then back on plan along ridge.
5. Drifted a bit left into marsh, then up to trail corner and up reentrant to knoll at the top. Up and over into depression.
6. +04:00Thought it would be easier to go right to the trail, but crossed right of first knoll instead of through saddle, setting me up to be one off counting reentrants. Got into wron reentrant and then wandered for a while unable to relocate. Finally saw Rob Wilkison and others lower and going further than I was and re-evaluated the situation
7. Punched at 6 a bit behind Jeff and Peter and tried to catch up to them. Not really sure of where I was, but keeping pace count after the trail and looking for the reentrant and the small depression. Looked good coming into it.
8. Jeff went more along line, while PG headed W down large reentrant. Since that was my plan anyway, stuck with PG, which was fine until he got to the bottom and asked me where we were. But I knew, since that was where I wanted to go anyway, and I just headed N across distinct spur, broad reentrant and next spur. Saw Jeff leaving control ahead of me.
9. +01:00Tried to go basically on line, but I was confused by the contours and was looking for a hill rather than a big reentrant. Ended up drifting well left and picking up the small N/S trail to the big one, then along trail to top and in on compass and reading the hill.
10. +04:00Plan was to go around marsh on the left, although it was obviously fine to just go right through. Drifted left and thought I was at corner of marsh and headed NE, but then I was in the marsh, and it was ok, so headed NNE. Saw the blue control on what looked like a spur off to my left, but that was a dot knoll. So still should have been easy, but missed it going by and then got out to the trail beyond. Missed it again coming in from the trail and then caught it the next time. What a drag.
11. On compass and looking carefully for the dot knoll, which I didn't see, but then I did see the pit.
12. Along the stream
