Race Evaluation

2008 Laramie Daze & US Champs: US Champs Green X

Charlie

1. Streamers
2. Straight and on compass, a few steps further than I thought.
3. Straight and on compass, up around big rock on the left
4. Tried to stay high and work my way above the cliffs, but it was too hard, so down to the yellow and along the edge angling across and climbing between the rocky knolls on the long spur and then on compass down the spur.
5. Uphill and left of the small knoll, then turned east and over the knoll , down the big reentrant. Across the reentrant at the dry ditch and by the big boulder near the aspens, easy from there through small patch of yellow.
6. Left of the big rocks, then down the spur on compass, across the reentrant and aimed just left of the big rock.
7. +06:00On compass, across the reentrant above the aspens, then got overconfident and up the wrong spur, off the map, finding lots of parallel features. Finally bailed out to the aspens and started over, and it was easy going up the reentrant.
8. Right of the big rocky knoll, then around and through the reentrant, past the edge of the aspens and easy from there.
9. +01:30Intended to go on the line and check off the big rock on the knoll on my right on the way, but drifted too far left in the yellow and finally saw the road ahead. Went right in the woods near the yellow until I got there.
10. On compass across the yellow, looking for the rough open on my right but not sure. Saw Ron Hudson ahead stopped reading his map, then got to the base of the wooded knoll and around, saw the reentrant and the first two knolls an in, punching right in front of Ron
11. Ron ran ahead and seemed to be crossing the aspens north, while I went closer to the line. I kept thinking he would pass me. Followed the edge of the yellow, past the rocky knolls and finally past the patch of aspens. Then I could see the big rock on the knoll and went past it on the right and right in. Ron showed up and again punched behind me.
12. Ron got away going across the yellow, although he was headed left of the line. I just aimed right of the smaller of the two really big rocks. Ron corrected and had about 50 meters on me by the control.
13. Across Diamond Bay and generally heading for the camper with the blue tarp in the clearing across. Ron went around to the right, but still was faster. He had about 100 or so M by the time we got close to the control, but he lost some going back and forth while I was pretty straight. I could see him punch maybe 50 m ahead.
14. +02:00On the line to the base of the big hill, then around through the yellow. Thought I was at the main spur, but got distracted off to the E one spur too early and lost some climb, relocating off a lone tree in a reentrant, then straight north from there - not the best attack point. Got to the spur about 50 m too high and ran down to it.
15. Compass
F. Seemed like a long way uphill. Surprised it only took a minute.
