Race Evaluation

Mt. Penn Short Course: Blue

EWhite

1.
2. Did not follow plan
Disturbed by others
+00:15
Planned straight attack. Got distracted and went downhill to road, relocated OK.
3. Stopped briefly to plant dirt clod atop fallen branch. Almost overran control - it seemed to appear too soon.
4. Bad map reading
+00:20
Didn't see wall on map, so ran slower than necessary while counting streams.
5.
6. Crossed road at trail junctions, then through white woods past #1.
7.
8. Bad map reading
Not thinking clearly
+00:30
Misread map - and planned route from 8 to 9, then went 50m south before correcting.
9. No attack point
Bad map reading
Could not relocate
+04:20
Down ride and in. Found and punched 105, then realized it was wrong control.. SE toward control on charcoal platform, realized not a rock feature, so south to visible control in depression, then up onto adjacent trail. Back up reentrant along E side of green then through middle of it to control. Didn't stop and make any serious relocation efforts through the entire sequence.
10. Lacked confidence
Slow start; shaky confidence. Went through trail junction heading SE, then up through wide open woods straight to control. Wonder where thicket is? Route probably not much slower than taking road.
11. Someone close behind me - I spike it.
12. Kenny Walker zips by as we leave #11. I plan to take straight but contouring approach but veer left, pulled by Kenny and the contours. At charcoal platform, realize trail and road are handy and chase Kenny to control about 50m behind.
13. Bad compass work
Could not relocate
+01:20
Intend to run right side of green but read vegetation poorly. Kenny seems to go too far right, and I veer left, then pushed by green to trail. See and dash to control. Wrong one! I'm at the boulder E of the charcoal platform. Relocation slow and ditch difficult to see. Kenny is long gone.
14. +00:05Run hard for almost only time all day. Stop within 10m of control which is hidden by tree.
15. Slow but steady approach by compass.
16. SE to major trail, along it for 50m or so, then SE again. Cut across stream a bit early.
17.
F. Overall, I was slow reading map and didn't run aggressively.
