Race Evaluation

2002 Billygoat Run:

tdgood

1. The plan, Not to win, run my own race and not worry about everyone else. Slow out of start. Decided to go to trail. Running down trail, I decided that 16 would be my default skip unless something else jumped out at me. That was about the last decision I made. Slow up trail, decided not to burn myself out. walked part of the hills. Followed crowd, leaders pulling away. Entered woods and turned on the jets and passed back all the slow runners. Edie and Gregory ahead of me. follow Edie. He overshoots low. We have to cut back to control. Tough to get to control as everyone else runs away in same path.
2. Follow Gregory in straight path.
3. Following Eddie and Gregory.
4. Eddie goes left up stream. Gregory goes right. I chose to follow Eddie. Wrong choice. Eddie looses me and rest of group going up stream. I know we are taking left route and will have to cut left. I am following people who I assume are following Eddie. They aren't. We hit trail and they cut into woods. I go about 20 feet in, realize we are to soon and go back to trail. I have to orientter and am slow to control. Expect all the leaders to be gone. Get there just behind Nadim and Peggy, and Randy Hall.
5. short leg, assume can't go wrong, take rough bearing and run hard following Peggy and Randy. Get to control just behind them.
6. Follow people out of 5. Randy is just ahead of me. There is David Onskt, He must have skipped. Then see Tim Good. realize that the whole crew must have skipped 3. Past randy on Trail. Randy is unsure where we are as the trail isn't on the map. I have a rough idea but tell Randy no. Sorry Randy. I assume that those people in front of know where they are going. Fortunately they do and we get to the control.
7. Pass Brad, Pass Tim Good, Pass David Onkst after he falls down. Skirt marsh and take road run. Run down road with real speed demon (canadian). I take the high route and cut in before everyone else. Tim and David Onkst follow. Go QOC.
8. I don't know. Get to far right. See Gregory Balter running away from control. Unfortunately he was running to the control. Oh well. I was last one to control.
9. Follow Randy andVlad. We take the worst route on side of hill through green. Cut up hill and get to control.
10. Follow crowd.
11. Being out run on trail. I decided to doglegg back from 11 to get to 12 on the way. At 11 I spend 28 seconds gulping gatorade and ERG.
12. Everyone else runs away. I follow a ways behind Vlad and Randy. I realize that last loop is small. I drank to much.
13. Follow Vlad and Randy. Eddie passes our group on the way. Just before control I trip on something and fall hard. My thigh hits a root and takes all the weight from the fall. It hurts and is difficult to run. I just hope it won't cramp up on the trail runs.
14. I am just following and falling behind. Realize that I really don't have a clue where I am and quickly hurry to catch up .
15. Since I am falling behind I start navigate.
16. Skip 16
17. Trail run. I can see Randy way ahead of me. I am being outrun on the trail.
18. Run in.
19. Map is wrong where trail hits road so I skip trail and run farther up road until I see other trail not on map. Approach from wrong side and expect it to be higher. See control down low just as John Fredrickson runs up and punches it.
